Stock market in today's trading showed first indication of reaction in
more than two weeks. Reeoiery in last few minutes of trading. Trading
on Curb influenced by movements on Stock Exchange. Grain closed irreg
ular1; cotton higher. Ruling rate for call money in Wall street 3 per cent.
Foreign exchange steady, liar silver unchanged. Gold withdrawn for ship
ment to Canada, Spain and Mexico.

was Intended to effect this purpose.
All nround tho room profit-taking sales were In order during tho forenoon,
nnd, at tho samo time, there was a receding from tho buying position on the
part of many Interests that had been nggrcssle on tho bull Mdo nil through
tho upward movement.
Tho general character of tho market was shown by the fact that, after
a wldo opening, United States Steel common sold down to 1304, or Just a
llttlo more than 3 points below Its high-record prlco mado yesterday.
Industrial Issues generally moved In tho samo manner, with ninny of tho
minor -ft teel Industrials falling 1 to 2 points. Copper stocks and marine Issues
moved In the samo way after some Irregular fluctuations. Thcro iero many
specialties which nctcd In a strong manner without regard to the iccent
market leaders.
American Linseed -stock becamo prominent, with tho common nnd pre
ferred both moving up moro than - points, nnd tho sugar stocks were nlso
actl-o and strong, with Ameilcan Sugar iteflnlng nnd Cuba Sugar Refining
making good gains. Pittsburgh Coal was another strong feature. Corn Pioducts,
which has been ndvnnclng steadily for u long time, after yielding 1 point
moved up to above 31, making a new high lecoid.
In tho late trading tho market for I'nlted States Steel common showed pro
nounced Improvement, that stock moving tip mure than 1 point nnd recovering
a good part of Its early loss. Other Issues followed It on this upturn, and tho
list generally In tho final dealings sold nt tho highest lango of tho day.
There was a fair amount of trading In tho bond market, but without
special chango In prices. Northern Pacific -Is sold at 884 nnd 88'. American
Telephone and Telegraph Us ranged from DD'.s to99. Anglo-French Es sold
at 93S to 924.

written and tho Initial transactions nro looked forward to with a good deal
of Interest.
Independent oil stocks generally weie steady, with Mcrrltt OH ranging
from 27 to 2G?i. Metropolitan Petroleum sold tit 2Vi to 2,
Air Reduction was ono of tho strong features, advancing from 82 to 84V4.
Central Foundry common mosed up from 27 at 28 and tho preferred advanced
from 47 to 47,,4. Triangle film was steady, with sales at 2 and 2.

trading on the I'hlladelphla Stock Hxchange
today that any definite trend developed In
any stock. Then rhlladelphla Ilapld Transit
trust certificates were taken In hand and
tho price was boosted to 30, the highest
at which It has sold In several weeks and
a gain of nearly 2 points ns compared
with tho closo of estcrday. There was
no explanation In the Street for the sud-
dm demand which appeared. All through
tho tlay the certificates were the most
actlio of the local Issues, but tho real
demand did not come until the last few
mlnulcs.
While there were some issue -which
wero a little higher, this was' not the gen
crnl rule Losses were, In the majority
of eases, small Tho widest decllno took
place In Northern Central, which, on light
trading, lost a little more than 6 points,
declining to a new low mark for the jear
Another low mark for the year was reached

stock
More trading was seen In rhlladelphla

Trade In wheat continued small and un
interesting Prices worked off after show
ing some firmness, closing Irregular. Tho
best on July was $2.06. the low $2 02 ' and
the close 2c lower nt $2 03; the top on
September was $186, the bottom $1 82'-s
and the final Jc higher at $1 83'
The market at Liverpool was dull and
easy.
Tho contract stock of wheat here is 53,000
bushels against 3,539,000 bushel last year

bushels, a decrease of 4.019.000 bushels for
