WINTER WHEAT MAKES
(.001) GROWTH IN WEEK
Government Report Shows Impioved
Conditions in Several
Sections
WVSHI.Nii'l ON" Mai 16 1 ho Unvern
niont's weekly weather leport savs Winter
wheat made good growth durliur the wiek
In Texas under thn Influence of well-dls.
tributed and generous showers There was
an Improvement In the Central and lower
Kockv Mountain legion and on the Patlllc
mast and a slow hut steadv Improiement
In most of the notthein sections "of winter
wheat belt
In Kansas conditions were generallv fav
orable but In Oklahoma theie was deteri
oration In the iiop In lentrnl and western
sections which was serious In soinu locali
ties It was heading low lu that State and
moie lain was needed to develop the gialu
In Tennessee the stand Is thin and small
und It is beginning lo head Although the
giowth was slow In Mlihlgan the llelds ,ue
showing good color The plants am ba
glnnlng to stool In uppei Ohio Vnlle
Corn Is taking the place of much of the
abandoned winter wheat area In Nebraska
The weather was erj favorable for farm
work In the northwestern Stales and the
seeding of spring whea' Is Hearing comple
tion In Minnesota and progressing well In
the more western Stales of the spring wleat
area
'I he cool nights letauled germination and
growth In Viconsin hut germination was
satlsfactoij and plants were ma.'.lng an
excellent growth in southern and central
spring wheat Mates.
Decidedly cool weathet with the cold dry
winds that ptcvalled In southern Mates, nn.
favorably affected cotton thioughout the en
tire belt Growth was slow and germina
tion was unusually poot Much replant
ing Is neiessary lu vlrtuallv all districts,
and In some sections of Mississippi and
Plorida the fields are being plowed up and
planted in other crops
The weather was favorable to cultivation
and that work was carried on in satisfac
tory manner Chopping was well advanced
In tasteui Texas nnd was going on In Cen
tral nnd llastern Stales Although tetaided
hy cold weather cotton, as a rule, Is in good
condition in Flo! Ida
Boll weevils have appeared In that State
however, and some cotton was being plowed
up and the area planted in corn.
Cool weather In central and eastern dis
tricts was unfavorable foi germination and
giowth, and in places much will need lo be
leplanted.
In the Southern Stales, however, while
corn made slow growth because of cold
weather, the damage was not so great to
this crop as It was to cotton Preparation
of ground for corn was well under way
nearly to the northern limits of the coun
try except In the extreme northeast ! but
planting had only begun In Northern States.
Planting was well under way In the Ohio
valley and as far north as the central Mis
souri valley Soil is in excellent .condition
In Iowa and Nebiaska and weather condi
tions were much more favorable for work of
planting than In more eastern districts
A much larger acreage than usual Is an
ticipated In these Stales, as It is the Inten
tion to put a laige part of abandoned wheal
acreage Into corn.
