AS SELLING GROWS
End Is Above the Lowest, Due to
Covering and Trade Demand.

Tho stock mnrkct was under benr control almost tlio entire day, with tho
upturn benr element mcctlnR with little opposition In concerted drives ngnlnst
tho Marine Issues, based on the announcement that tho Kng'llsh Government
hud commandeered 80 per cent of tho tonnage of tho company.
Thu Street construed this to mean that the net income of the company would
bo materially reduced because of tho rates which will be Itxed by tho Kngllsh
Government, and. on this belief Marine preferred was steadily offered down,
dropping to 79, against h"i at tho close on Saturday. The common stock
sold down to 27Ui a loss of more than 5 points from Saturday's closing price.
United States Steel common showed u firm tono for a short tlmo in tho
early trading, when It sold at 113, but stories of oppressive taxation and Bomo
of the statements made by Judgo Gary at tho annual meeting gavo the bears
enough confidence to mako them renew attacks on tho stock. Many selling
orders of 0000 nnd 10,000 shares wcro executed throughout tho day, and the fact
that tho prlco yielded only a llttlo more than 2 points wns regarded as evidence
of substantial support from lending banking interests.
Many other Issues yielded from 3 to 5 points, and there wero few exceptions
to the general downward movement. International Paper attracted attention
In this respect by Its advanco of more than 2 points to 40 during tho first
half of tho day. The bulk of the trading was of professional character, espe
cially on the selling side, and one result of tho lgorous selling In the leading;
stocks during tho day was a substantial Increase of the ahcady large short
account.
The railroad stocks moved In the same manner as tho Industrials, although
Important Interests on tho Street were confident that the Interstate Commerce
Commission would soon announce an Increase of 15 per cent in freight .rates.
Tho market closed weak.
Trading in bonds was comparatively small In volume, with nearly all the
active Issues showing moderate losses. Anglo-French 5s- ranged from 94 to
95. Pennsylvania 4s, when issued, wero traded In at 97 and 97'4.
OFFER' CURB ISSUES AT CONCESSIONS
BUT MOST DECLINES ARE NOT LARGE
NEW YOHK, April 16.
A number of the Important stocks on the Broad Street Curb were unsettled
by tho weakness which prevailed on tho big board, and tomo of tho street
traders followed the example of tho professional element on the Exchange,
taking the bear side nnd offering the stocks at concessions. Tho declines,
however, in most cases were limited to a small rnnge, and tho narrow volumo
of trading robbed these losses of any significance they might havo possessed.
More Interest was attached to stocks which wero maintained at around
recently prevailing prices thnn to those which yielded under bear pressure.
Everett llcaney & Co. stock continued in good demand at 21 and- 21U. nnd a
number of the mining stocks were firmly held.
Magma sold nt KO, Butter Copper and SCInc at 9- and 9',4 nnd .Ml! ford at
1 1-32. Magnate Copper was In good demand also, with sales at 75 to 77 cents.
Some of the war-order stocks, Including Maxim Munitions, which are now
selling closo to bed rock, showed additional fractional declines, and Submarine,
which advanced to 23 In the early trading, later dropped to 21 U. National
Conduit was In fairly good demand, with sales at 34 to 34.
' The Independent oil stocks wero irregular. Midwest sold at 141 to 143
and Merrltt at 25 to 2G. Houston Oil, which was a Rtrong fcaturo on Saturday,
reacted from 23 V4 to 21 U.
Another weak feature In the Curb market was tho pressure against tho
new notes of tho New Haven Railroad. Thcso notes, recently brought out at
99.04, sold down to 98. Other bond Issues wero heavy and fractionally lower.

That Investors In this city are, "preparing
to take up some of the Government bonds
which are to be Issued la shown by the
weekly statement of conditions of the
Philadelphia Clearing House Association
by Increases In deposits. Individual de
posits rose J3.240.000 and bank deposits ad
vanced $2,120,000. In the previous week
