Theie was more Miengtli It) Hie Mock nmiket In the liuir-Juy'n trndltiir'tliHii
wus Indlcnted In the olumc of business nnd the Irregular price movements.
It wiu evident that United .States Steel rommon In being constantly absorbed
by strong Interests. That stock showed nn nrivnnclng tendency whenover bear
pressure diminished, but the two hours' trading did not result In much recorded
' gain, as the speculative clement persistently offered tlio stock whenever the
demand showed decreased vigor.
Tho same thing could be said about Heading. In which buying ordcis ton
llnunlly conic In, causing upturns frequently during the half day and making
the stock maintain the high level established In the previous day's trading
Many of the lower-priced railroads, Including Southern Hallway, were also In
good demand, and there was broadened interest shown In New York Central,
which was one of tho strongest features of the first hour.
United .States Steel common advanced more than 1 point to IIS?, but
leaded .from this price before the close. Mexican Petroleum made a gain of
nearly 3 points to 91, and the Hitgnr stocks were In good demand nt advancing
prices, with both Cuba Cane Sugar and Oubaii-Anieilcaii .Sugar making sub
stantial gains. '
The greatest weakness was shown In People's !as. which lespoudcd to the
decrease In the dividend rate to 4 per cent per annum with u break of 9 Vi
points to 81, followed by u moderate rally. The dividend reduction was attributed
to the high cost of material and leealls reference to the high cost of coal In
connection with the recent offerings of Consolidated (Jas of Xew York and
public utilities generally.
The boardroom was surprised shoitl aflei the opening by the announce
ment of the suspension of Morris & Pope. The senior member of the film Is
one of the line of tne Motrin family that has been prominent In New York
city affairs for more than 300 yenrs, and he was estimated as having a fortune
of more than $5,000,000. The family was known all through tho countiy
because of Mr. Morris's owneishlp of tho old Morris Park race track. Stock
Exchange officials stated that the liabilities of the firm wetc small, but no
definite Information as to causo nf the suspension was obtained.
There was heavy trading again today In foreign (iovcrnnicnt bonds, with
United Kingdom notes making fractional gains, Pennsj Ivnnln I'h were active
at ! and 07'.
