FINANCIAL NEWS
MANY CROSS MOVEMENTS IN PRICES
MARK WALL STREET STOCK TRADING
Changes in Nearly All Cases Are to Higher Levels Lead
ing Issues Absorbed by Important Interests.
Strong Tone Late in Day
High Points in Today's Financial News
Constant variation in price viorcmrnln on New York Stock Exchannc.
Stocks gcncraUu higher at close. Financial district waitinn for Government
bond issue. Wheat soared to new high record today, M-ij 7 caching $2.25.
Cotton closed loiver. New York hanks lost $52,8(ll,7lT on movements of
money ifi week ending yesterday. Mote gold sent to Japan and Spain. Price
of bar silver lower.
NIJW VOIUC, April 13.
The stock market showed LniiHtnnt wiilutlon in tone with many eiois moc
mciits In pilcei nil through tho day, hut the Impoitnnt changes that lcsultcd
from the day's operations wore In nearly nil lmioh to mnterlnl higher flgurci,
This icsult reflected tho continued nbborptlon of le.idlng stocks bv somo Inipoi
taut Interests that liao on piovlotis occasions been identified with vigorous
upward movements. This buying waH moit pionoimced In Rcmllng, which
lose to nboe 97, making n gain of nearly 3 points.
Union Pacific was another strong feature, moving up n. point on moderate
transactions. Tho Industrials wero generally strong, with United States Steel
common moving up T4 to llf7, nnd although It leaded more than 1 point
during tho afternoon, It quickly moved back to 111!. Tho Marine stocks hhowed
strength nt the stnrt, but tho gains which weio miido nt tho opening weio
wiped out In the last half of tho day. Texas Company was one of tho stiongest
features, advancing more tlinn 5 points, nnd wns followed by Meknn Pell oleum,
which moved up 3 points.
Tho motor stocks wore ng.iln under picssuie, with Studclukcr offered down
from 95 Jo below !:!. The majority of Issues In the Into trading showed a
stiong tone, but nttneks by tho loom tiadcrs (omtnlttcd to tho bear sldo
continued up to tho end of tho day, causing constant lcccsslons nfter ccry
upturn.
Little clso wns spoken of In tho 'Wall street district etept tho Ciovcinmcnt
bond wile. Expectation of tho offering being heavily nci subset ibed constituted
tho basis for most of tho confldcnco In tegnrd to the market outlook, nnd was a
factor in causing substantial ndvnnccs In foreign shnrt-lcim notes.
Tho bond market continued to wait for dellnlto action in legard to tho
Government flnnnclng, but whllo railroad bonds generally were o.ulet, there
were largo transactions In foreign Government Issues. United Kingdom 3 and
G J car notes moed up 1 point, nnd, according to Institution experts who decide
on investments, those notes which arc still selling In letum n leld of 0 per
cent will quickly go to below it f per cent basis.
CURB TRADING SHOWS DISPOSITION
TO WAIT FOR SALE OF WAR BONDS
NEW YOniC, April 13.
The Broad Stieot Curb market gao tho clearest indications of tho manner
in which business Is being lestrlcted because of tho disposition to wall for the
Government bond Ihsuc. That market Is without tiadlng element on either
side. Changes In prices In Cuib stocks generally determined by special reasons
and well-founded outside Interest.
Public nttcntion is gradually being devoted to new gioups of( stocks
This was to bo expected after tho recent mniket leaders weto transferred to
tho big board. Tho stock of Everett, Heany & Co. demonstiatcd the way In
which new stocks may como into prominence That company handles purely
commercial business, with expoits nnd Imports going to and coming from
nearly nil paits of the world, and in 1910 its net sales weio more than
$5,000,000. Thus far In 1917 Its business Is far ahead of the preceding ear,
and the fact that it has not dealt In war supplies has a good deal to do with
making It a popul.tr issue.
Authorized statements nio made that it will be put on a 10 per cent divi
dend basis on July 1. Sales of stock were mndo today at 21 xh and 21U. Standatd
Motois was activo and bttotifr, advancing fiom 13 (p 14Vj, and some of tho
oil stocks wero In brisk demand, with Midwest lleunlng advancing from 13.'
n 14.1. Houston Oil lose from 22 to 23, and Menltt advanced from 23 to 23t.
