folded wholly by the developments at Washington Inst night and today. Tho
nws from Washington about tho altltudo of tho Houso after tho reading of tho
President's message last night was responded to with vigorous buying all around
the room at the opening. There was nn urgent demand then for United Htntes
common, which moved up moro than 2 points to 118, but this advance released
many large selling orders and It was not long beforo tho prlcereacted to 117V4.
Many other Issues moved in tho samo way, maklnir vigorous mimnm. n. ,
t( beginning of business with quick recessions after the first few minutes of trading.
Then the marKci tone necumc strong again, nut tho Street was staggered by the
..vi of the obstruction placed by La Follette to the passage of the House vesolii.

which to base bear attacks and the opposition presented by tho Wisconsin Senator

United States Steel common was forced down below 116, and the bear traders
npved from that stock to tho railroad group, offering down such Issues ns Canadian
Pacific, Reading, Union Pacific nnd Lehigh Valley in regular sequence and causing
uibstantial losses from the midday range. Some stocks resisted theso bear attacks
and displayed exceptional strength while the majority of issues joined in tho down
ward movement. Bethlehem Steel "B" was in demand all through tho day, advanc
ing from 139?i to ubovo 143.
The chief feature of tho bond market was the strength shown In foreign issue.
Anglo-French 5s, which had ranged for some time around 0i?4l was traded In In
large blocks up. to 93.

GOVERNMENT ISSUES LEAD ON CURB
NEW YOItK, April 3.
The feature of the trading on the Broad Street Curb today was tho immense
volume of business In Pennsylvania 44s and the foreign Government bonds.
More than $3,000,000 of Pennsylvania 4V4s were traded In at prices ranging from
J8H to 97?5. Sales of French 5's totaled more than $1,000,000 at 9S to 99&.
Russian 6s sold at 96 to 97 and 54s at 874 to 88.
There was a good business In many of the Industrials and war-oider mocks,
with Aetna Explosives selling at G'6 to' 434. Maxim Munition ranged from 3?
to 4',4 and Marlln Arms was traded in at 94 to 90. Air Keiluction sold at 73 to
72. Submarino sold at 23 to 23 $.
All the oil stocks were active and many of them showed pronounced strength,
with most Interest attached In the trading In Atlantic Petroleum, in which' some
large transactions were made at 8. Barnett Oil was active and strong, with trans
actions a 3 to 3T. Oklahoma ranged from 11 to 10.
Merrltt sold at 27U to 'JGVi ami Cosden Oil at 14 and. 14 'J.
' Tho mining stocks were Irregular. Magma dropped from 55 to 53, Ulg Ledge
was traded in at 4 to 4, Butto. Copper and Zinc nt 11 to 11U, United Verdo
at 39 and Jerome Verde at 2 and 2 1-16.
United Alotors wero weak, dropping from 38s to 37. Standard Oil issues
were quiet, with Ohio Oil selling at 3S8 and Standard Oil of New York at 316.

modern lines that occasioned a laugh when

strode from the wings right into tho cal

"Six Little Wives" Cross Keys
"Six I.lttle Wives," a musical tabloid, it
the headliner at the Cross Keys Theatre
and proved a big hit. It is 0110 of the most

duced by Boyle Woolfold. with many
catchy songs and bright lines. Al Harrison
and Johnnie Phllllber play the leading
comedy roles and the rest of the company
performed creditably.
Rose nnd Powers entertained with sev
eral good songs and a number of funny
stunts, while Charles I.edegar kept tho
audience on edge with daring stunts on a
slack wire, During the latter half of the
week, beginning Thursday, several new nets
will be on the bill, Including Swain's Peta,
a dainty animal act, and Clinton and
Rooney In a song, dance and comedy act.
Welch's Minstrels Nixon Grand
That a good minstrel show Is nlways
popular with theatregoers was evidenced
last night at the Orand by the enthusiastic
reception given Knunett Welch and his
minstrel troupe. "Our Army and Navy"
was the title of the show, and In addition
to hearing some good singing and jokes
of the latest vintage, the audience was
given some genuine patriotic thrills.

of the unaffected, simple, everyday sort of
drama, A great deal of latter-day natural

ing efforts. So, In "Idle Wives" we get
the little touches of life poverty. Jealousy, j
boredom, the antics of Infants neatly
limned and truthfully put across. About
the propriety of such a story as Is pre

appearing In this city for the first time
Is on the hill at Keith's Theatre this week.
Emily Ann Wellman and a carefully se
lected company appeared In tho "Young Mrs.
Stanford," a "Flash Drama," written and
directed by Edward Ulsner When tho cur
tnln arises the stage Is black, and by the
aid of various lights elevtr. dllrcrent scenes
are shown.
While the plot that of an unfaithful
husband who has an affair with tho wife
of another is nn old one, the Hash Idea la
novel and Miss Wellman and the four mem
bers of her company .-icrformed creditably.
Joseph E. Howard, composer of songs of
this and .v esteryear, appeared with Ml5s
Etlielju Claik, an Ingenue with a pleasing
voire, in a repertoire of his song hits of
the past and piesent. He sang many songs
last night that were popular a few years
ago, but which have since been almost for
gotten, nnd It was pleasant to hear them
recal'ed by tho author.
Pletio, the piano accordionist who has
been In this city before, got a big round of
app'ause for his rendition of many of the
popular ahs and rags on his accordion.
Stuart Rarnes sung n number of clever
little songs and aired bis opinions on the
high cost of living and woman suffrage.
He kept the audience in good humor.

With scenes laid In Hawaii, India, Egypt
am'. Greece, vere given by Miss Evan-Burrows
Fontaine, assisted by .1 Sheldon, a
husky joung man. and a half-dozen pretty
girls. The program Included "Lei-Aloha," a.
Hawaiian lomance; Dance Egyptian, Pan
dora and the Box of Jewels, and Saravastl,
the Bride of the Sun God, an East Indian
legend. In this dance, according to the
legend, Saravastl. a beautiful young woman,
was reared by the priests to become the
bride tJ 'be Sun God. A youth who sees the
girl come out of the temple and worship the
sinking sun falls in Ioo with her, and when
he throws a garland of flowers around her
neck considered a wedding ceremony In
some parts of India she Is stricken dead
by lightning, the wrath of the gods.
George Rowland and company appeared
In "The Vacuum Cleaner," a comedy sketch,
and were appreciated. Billy Kelly, who
assisted Rowland, was funny with his
cockney dialect, and Finnk Clare and Joe
Baiter, as a "trick" horse, were clever.
