NKW YOiUC, March 20.
Tho development of n vigorous bull movement made further progress In
todny'w trading on tho .Stock Kxchnnge, when prices of numerous Issues had
ntt upward nwlng ranging from 1 to 7 points, nnd with tho upturn having a
solid hacking of ti general and stcndlly broadening outsldo Interest. Those who
forttj nn Important part of tho Wall street professional clement continued
aggressively bearish, with tho plungers on tho bear side selling stocks In largo
blocks. Tho room traders fought tho advance, offering stocks at concessions
whenever tho buying heemud to diminish in vigor.
Tho largo offerings, however, wore easily absorbed, nnd tho manner in
which tho market moved in face of heavy selling bt ought tip tho rcmatlt often
mado by Jay (iotild: "That everybody is bigger than anybody." The rommls-slon-houso
buying, which increased In volume throughout tho day, was almost
wholly on comparatUely small orders, ehle, fly 100 and 200 Hhnrcs at a time,
but reaching a largo aggregate.
There were many efforts to cover shorts, but tho supply of stocks con
tinued scant, a condition to bo expected after tho constant depletion ot Wall
street holdings. There were special reasons for advances in many stocks, the
buying of the llcthlehcm Steel issues, which mado tho greatest gnlns. being
based, to a great extent, on knowledge of nn examination and report on the
property, understood to have been filed with controlling interests yesterday.
Tho Marino issues also had a special reason for a display of pronounced
strength In the matters that have not yet been mado public.
The declaration of a stock dividend U expected on Industrial Alcohol.
Sloss-Kheflleld becamo prominent lato In tho day, when it advnnced 6 points
to 7-1. Kcrcsslons were frequent nnd in some Issues extensive after vigorous
advances wore made, but these recessions did not lndlcato nny chango in
market conditions.
Bonds wero strong alt through tho day, with trading in larger volume than
'for somo time past. Many issues made gains ranging around 1 point.
OIL STOCKS ARE MOST PROMINENT
IN VIGOROUS TRADING ON THE CURB
SEW YORK, March 20.
Thero was vigorous trading on tho Eroad Street Curb all through tho day,
with the nil stocks-demanding most interest again. Merrltt Oil was traded in
at 30 to 31. and Midwest Kenning ranged from 130 to 134. Klk Basin rose
from 13 to 1-Hh. a new high record, and there was a strong tono to Saptilpa,
which rose from It1, to 12',..
Mining stoyks wero irregular, with tho low-priced Issues generally in best
demand. Kex Consolidated rose frnmf'37 to 41 cents on buying based on advices
of a new strlko nl tho company's mfne, nnd it was stated that its output will
soon be more than doubled.
High-pilced stocks were generally llrm, with United Verdo selling at 3d
to 3!i, Kutte Copper and V.c from 10 to 11 nnd Big I.edgo from 4"& to 5.
Progress Mine and Milling was In good demand, with large transactions around
V4. Tho company lias purchased the Robinson mine in Colorado, which was
operated on a lease.
St. Joseph's Lead sold at 1SU and IS',4, and Calumet and Jerome at 1
and 1, and Jeromo Verdo at 2 and 21-lfi. Midvnlo Steel moved in harmony
with the steel shares on the board, advancing from KO'i to 00.
Zinc Concentrat, lug showed a resumption of speculative "activity, being
traded in on a large scalo and advancing from 3'i to 3;. Chevrolet dropped
from 111 to 13fl but later rallied to 135.
