which his friends predict will mako him
a valuable asset In the dangerous work of
the ambulance corps. He Is an experienced

MKEeURB CLUBS
CRIWaZED BY BISHOP
Forty-fourth and Thirty-fourth
Ward Republican Organiza
tions Under Quarantine
A quarantine has been placed by the po
llco on t.vo political clubs In West Phila
delphia ns a direct result of tho recent de
nunciations of Bishop John J. McCort.
All who attempted to enter the Forty
fourth Ward nepubllcan Club, at Lancaster
avenue and Forty-sixth street, or tho Thirty
fourth Ward Republican Club, In t:.o Bame
neighborhood, were subjected to close scru
tiny by tho police of tho Sixty-first and
Thompson streets station.
Unless tho visitors showed credentials of
membership they wero not allowed to enter.
The quarantine was so strict that no In
vited guests wro admitted, even If mem
bers vouched fur them.
Bishop McCf rt said recently that his at
tention had be i called to alleged conditions
existing in several West Philadelphia clubs
by young men In tho neighborhood. They
told of visiting certain clubs and of losing
their wages In gambling, Bishop McCort
said. Ho alt told of liquor selling In many
of the clubs.
The two clubs quarantined yesterday are
only a short distance from Our Mother of
Sorrows' Catholic Church, of which Bishop
McCort is rector.

Resident of Lancaster County Accused
of Burning Own Home
LANCASTER, Pa., March ID Almost
coincident with the release from custody
of Garfield Trostlo on tho charge of nrson,
Stato policemen arrested George Seldom
rldge, of Intercourse, on the same charge.
Seldomrldge's house was burned' and the
receipt of a threatening letter threw sus
picion on Trostle. Tho pollco In their In
vestigation of the note left at the door of
Seldomrldge's houso followed a clue which
led to tho Seldomrldge place, where they
found a slip of paper of tho kind on which
the note was written. The torn edges fitted
and evidence pointed to the fact that Sel
domrldge himself had written tho note.
Seldomrldgo disappeared on Friday night,
but was found In Chester County, and ad
mitted writing the note.
FLASHES
two days of a new Installment of tho official
British war pictures.
The management of the Ruby Theatre
has prepared a series of delightful sur
prises for the entertainment of tho many
patrons of tho popular nnd centrally located
amusoment resort, and not the least of
these good things Is the dedication of the
magnificent new organ which has Just been
completed and will be ready to add to the
pleasure of the audience. This Instrument
Is considered the last word In artistic organ
construction and its manifold beauties of
tone will be heard at every performance.
The dramatic offerings also offer many stars
In unusual feature plays.
At the Alhambra Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday the star will be Fannie Ward In
the first and only showing in South Phila
delphia of "The Winning of Sally Temple."
This is a plcturizatlon of Rupert Sergeant
Holland's celebrated story.
From the prolific pen of Abe Einstein
comes the fo flowing:
"All highways In the Germantown dis
trict and Its contiguous territory lead to
what Is now considered the most attractive
resort for lovers of the most artistic photo
play entertainment the Rialto Theatre.
Day after day and night, after night happy
family groups of fathers and mothers,
sons and daughters, are to be found with
in Its spacious and hospitable auditorium
keenly enjoying the masterpieces of the
films that are presented In such abundance
and enjoyment under tho direction of the
Stanley Company, and lovers of the
"movies" realize fully that when a thea
tro bears tha mark of"Stanley direction"
It means that they receive only the high
est class of attractions of the kind that
will educate. Improve and delight young
and old, presented In such a manner that
no one can raise the slightest captious or
frivolous objections. In all departments of
the houso tho management is ever alert to
Insure the patrons comfort and convenience,
and not even the most minute detail that
contributes to this end Is overlooked. Hence
It Is that among other things that make
this theatre the leader In this section of
tho city may bo mentioned tho system of
ventilation, which is as nearly perfect as
human Ingenuity could devise. Another
point that has won enthusiastic comment
Is cleanliness, and thus Is an lmperatlvo
and Important factor In all department!
lobby, main auditorium, rest rooms and,
In fact, everywhere the constant war Is
made on dust germs, and the Rialto may
bo said to bo Immaculate. Of course, of
first consideration Is tho photoplays, and,
second, the manner In which they are pre
sented. The projection hero Is accomplished
on the latest Improved screen Invention,
which does away with all eye strain and
brings out the pictures in the highest de
gree of clearness, nnd still another agent
In making the public feel at homo Is the
staff of attaches, every one eagtr to render
any reasonable service that patrons may
desire, and are alert, polite, courteous,
civil fully capable of peafotnlng their
duties capably and satisfactorily. These
are only a few of the predominating fea
tures that have made tho Rialto Theatre
a favorite resort with the superior number
of fine people, to which may be added the
fact that the price Is always ten .cents, no
matter what the feature.

Tete Donovan carries a perpetual appe

it. When It appears to bo thoroughly con
quered It can bo fanned to llfoRatn by
the scent of anything good.
But If there's nnythliifr that rouses Pete's
appetite to full fury why, It's frying bacon.
A sniff of this on a frosty ,mnrn and
Teto la beyond control.
Donovan was suffering one of his blue
streaks duo chiefly to a persistent hunger
nnd empty , pockets. To mako matters
worse, thero was nothing doing In his par
ticular line. It seems that nil tho cellars
had been whitewashed, nil tho ashes .had
been carried out, all tho barrooms had been
cleaned, nil tho sldewulks had been washed
and everything was In such an alarming
state of ifcrfectlon that things not only
looked blue but purple.
fcto was deliberating as to the next movo
will 1 0 standing nt Tulip street and Lehigh
avenue, when the door of 11 houso across the
street opened and there, exposed to full
view, was a healthy-looking meal, and from
tho houso thero came the appealing scent of
fried bacon mingling with sizzling eggs. It
appears that tho housekeeper threw open
tho door to let out tho heat causdd In
preparation of the feast. Pctn noticed that
a placo was hct Just for one. "Thnt's goln'
to be me," lie murmured. Ho stolo Insldo
tho room when tho woman of the houso went
to another part of tho dwelling and at
tacked tho food with silent speed. Several
slabs of bacon, three eggs, two cups of
coffee, four rolls and a Hock of fried po
tatoes had disappeared before the woman
again appeared. Sho uttered n yell and
dropped n pl.ito of hot cakes on tho floor.
"I'll have )oti pinched," sho yelled.
"That belli' tho rase, I may 03 well finish
the meal," said Pete, and he went after tho
rest of It. Tho woman yelled "pollco," and,
strango to say, a cop nrrlvcd In half a min
ute. Ho, too, was amazed at tho coolness
of Pcto. Ho refused to let him finish tho
feast, but Pete brought somo of tho eats
along In his pocket.
On facing Magistrate Dcltr at tho Tren

Peto said, "I Mils! hungry an' I thought I'd
