,City Playhouses to Bo Erected
When Orphans' Court Grants
Permission
S'WILL OF RICHARD SMITH
Fidelity Trust, Executor, Plana
, Carry Plensdro'to Children in
New Building Scheme
to
There'll bo sandplles an' roller skates nn
merry-go-rounds I Thero'll be tha story hour
when all the folks who llvo In books will
Creep out of their pases Into the twilight
nd talk to the real llva peopla who coma
to listen I There'll bo this Is Just maybe
wading pond where even If your feet are
dusty you can just po In and splash 1
This may sound like n. kid's Utopia, but
It Is not. It Is a real live ptneo that Is
tolng to spring up rlitht In tho heart of
Philadelphia's slums Just as soon as tho
Orphans' Court grants tho Fidelity Trust's
petition ror permission to spend J600.000
for tha building and maintenance qt a num
ber of city playhouses.
The situation was outlined today by Mr.
William Cest. president of the Fidelity
Trust, executor for the wilt of Itlchard
Smith, from whoso estate tho basis of tho
playground fund will come.
IUCIIARD SMITH'S PLANS
( 'The will of lllchard Smith, the type
founder," said J!r. Gest, "provided for the
erection of tho Monumental Memorial In
West Falrmount Park and for tho Chil
dren's Playground In " liist Falrmount
Park. After the building of these two
memorials tho ostato has still a sufficient
um arising from accumulated Income to
Justify tho establishment of other play
grounds. Tho opinion of tho trustee, as
stated In the petition, Is that theso play
grounds could ho more advantageously
erected In the congested parts of Phila
delphia, rather than In Falrmount Park,
and the petition has therefore been pre
sented to tho Orphans' Court for leave
to do so.
'The Idea Is to bring tho playgrounds to
the children rather than to mako the chil
dren go to tho playgrounds, as they do
now to tho Children's Playground In Fair
mount Park. We need playhouses and
playgrounds 'where the children may get
to them easily. Tho city play places will
be composed of buildings and grounds, They
probably will be conducted along tho lines
of the Park playhouse, with tho exception
that only young children may recreate
there, while In tho new playgrounds it Is
Just possible that older children also may
le given the opportunity.
$600,000 TO SPEND
"How far $000,000 will go will depend
upon the amount paid for the- sites, and
as no sites have yet been selected by tho
trustee it is impossible nt the present time
to say how many such playgrounds can
be established, but it Is hoped there may
be three."
The children's playhouse In Falrmount
Park" Is a two-story Colonial building, de
signed by the architect, James H. Wlndrlm.
Exteriorly and Interiorly it affords every
Conceivable amusement that the heart of a
boy or girl could wish for. It Is to be ex
pected that the generosity and personal In
terest characterizing the maintenance of
the Park playground will attend the new
enterprise and guarantee the fortunate little
youngsters the best playground In the land.

"P Nature," exclaimed a famous
rtlst once. He pulled down tho curtain and
painted masterpieces by gaslight. Something
of the sort happens in the movies. For In
stance, this new Metro picture Is quite top
notch In lighting,, photography and all tho
accessory details. It doesn't ever hit the
human spot In us. But a lot of that Is, after
HI, the fault of us who demand verity,
rather than a thrill. In our moving pictures.
Beside the nice uttentlon to camera 'work
and the like. 'The Harrlcade," with Its
unreal but tellingly melodramatic situa
tions, possesses the statuette-like Mabel
Taliaferro. Unlike most photoplay stars,
he Is simple, unassuming, winsome, deli
cate. It also possesses the best character
acting to date 'bar only Griffith's players
in the role taken by Frank Currier. This
remarkable, "registering" faco helps to
make the story of a girl who married a man
he thought her father's enemy more likely
than It really Is.
The Chestnut Street Opera House has
changed Its mind about "Tho Crisis," nnd
has substituted "Womanhood: or, the Glory
of a Nation." This latter piece, written by
Cyrus Townsend Drady nnd J, Stuart Black
ton, Is a Vltagraph product. Hushed whis
pers convey the Information that It deals
with preparedness. "For the present," war
bles the press representative, "the nature of
the absorbingly interesting dramatic tale
in not revealed, but It Is anticipated that
there will be considerable discussion of the
treatment that has been given by the
authors to a subject of vital Importance."
It opens next Monday ntternoon.
Jlobert Harron, one of the most mobile of
the young motion-picture players and a for
mer Griffith protege, has signed with the
ambitious Goldwyn firm. Mr. Harron, who
will be Mae Marsh's leading man. has al
ready begun work for the Goldflsh-Selwyn
Interests under the direction of John W.
Noble. Now, will some Informed person
arise and tell us' what became of the project
to feature the actor In a photoplay located
In various cities of this country. Including
Philadelphia? If "Bobble" has been here
lately he "came In- on rubbers."
