CONVENTION HALL
Opposes Plan for Miniature
Auditorium Confers With
Prominent Citizens
WANTS UTILITY FIRST
Maor Smith has announced that he Is
opposed to the smnll Comentlon Hall plan.
He Is urging a hall that will aicommodale
nt least 12,000 persons
Philadelphia should have a new munlilpal
auditorium capable of housing tho largest
cotnentlons and of glUng them ample ex
hibition space, he said
Utility of the building should bo consid
ered first, he said, New plans are being
drawn up. Maor Smith said ho thought
a suitable structure could bo erected for
the sum authorized, $1,438,000.
In making the announcement, Mayor
Smith said he had been Impressed by the
wholesale opposition voiced against the
"compromise" Com cut Ion Hall, which
would have seated only 6000 persons.
Furthermore this building would hno af
forded no room for exhibitions of small
prUate gatherings for administrative pur
pose, considered so Important nt large con
ventions Major Smith said-
"I am frank to say that I had somo
lurking doubts as tn the essential utility of
tho 'compromise' building Thcso have been
confirmed, beyond reasonable doubt, by tho
will of the people
"I do not think thero need b any fear
that a creditable building can bo put up
for tho tnoncy-unlcss the cost of bulldlnsr
materials nnd of human energy rl"e beyond
present probability
Tho first consn'cratbn will bo that of
usefulness While It would bo fine nnd a
beautiful thing to have tho original build
ing with Its Hues of a pagan temple. Its
rich architectural ornament, nnd Its more
or less rare materials, common senso must
enter Into tho problem
' We are bound by necessity, nnd It may
prove to bo an excellent stimulus We shall
set the architect to work, and seo what
can be done. As soon an wo find out, the
public will be fully Informed "
Effort will bo made to have the hall ac
commodate, If possible, nt least 12,000.
Mayor Smith already has conferred with
a number of prominent citizens ami asked
their views on the subject
He made especial rcferenco to the
desirability of a building which would he
large enough for the needed convention pur
poses and which would bo simpler in design
than tho "compromise" building.
