CHICAGO, March II Kears of a strike
on the railroads were responsible for pro

day. Business was curtailed somewhat by
poor wire scnlce, owing to bad weather.
At the Immediate start the tono was easier
under selling and further precipitation In
the winter belt.
Announcement of the slnklry? of the
American steamer Algonquin bad a bullish
effect on alues tempoirtrlly and prlcos wero
helped by a dispatch from Oeoige M. re
count, who Is In Kansas, to the effect that
from Kinsley to Dodge City It was his
opinion that more than CO per cent of tho
wheat crop was dead. He said also that
many fields were totally bare nnd that there
had been no moisture of consequence In that
section. At any rate, the market developed
firmness, rising nboe estcrday's close.
Selling on the advance was liberal and
Iharp declines followed. May wan particu
larly heay and many stop-loss orders were
caught.
Covering caused the market to finish
