GALVESTON', Tex., March 12. Tho Har
rison liner Professor, flying the British flag,
narrowly escnped being torpedoed In tho
Mersey, according to Captain Sam Bass.
Tho I'rofessor arrived In port todn. A
torpedo passed within three feet of the
hip's stern. No submarine was sighted.
"On tho night of February 2," said Cap
tain Bass, "when we wero a few hours out,
wo began receiving 8. O, S . cnlls. We
saw n blfc oil tank liner torpedoed off our
port bow. Tho cntlro steamship cnught
fire u nd In the glare we saw for miles around
ships sinking. A torpedo sped within three
feet of us."
Tho steamship Artist, of the Harrison
line, already has been reported torpedoed
in Jnnuniy Captain Mills nnd all of the
oincers and the crew but nine were frozen
to death In open bonis.
