ENTER JIMMIE, THE
SIDE-KICK OF
MARY
At the cato of the studio Mary wns -con
fronted by nn excited old lady and a de
termined llttlo kiddle, who expostulated to
the doorman and Insisted upon an Imme
diate Interview with tho popular Klrl of
the screen. Dodging between tho leg of
the doorman, tho youngster threw him
M upon Miss Plckford, excitedly de
manding that sho accept a bulky package
he had brought. "Hero's somo cookies
grandma made for you," said tho tiny one.
"We came nil tho way from Brooklyn to
give 'em to you, and now this man won't
let ui," added he with what was meant to
present a look of fierce scorn at tho of-
I? fender.
Right then ana mere mo lamous Lit
tle Mary" hunched herself upon tho dusty
ttudlo floor at tho peril of her pretty silk
frock, and with tho delight of a kiddle on
Christmas morn opened tho packago
J While the director, cameraman and play-
5'tr waited to go on with tho scene, Mary
V foreot everything savo to reassure Jlmmio
and his mother. When finally tho breach
I was patched up, Mary returned to kher
; work nfter comfortably Installing her vis
itors as her spectators a few feet away
from where sho enacted her scene. Al
though at first it seemed as If Jlmmio was
! the cause of considerable trouble. It turned
out that ho was a godsend. For several
fla)8 Director Tourneur had been search

- "A 'Poor Little Rich CJIrl," and before tho
hOouthful Flynn realized It he had become
an actor In the same cast with his Idol,
X. and can bo identified In the picture by tho
. fact that he Is the smallest player in the
production.
' Thep following day another scene was
ipolled by llttlo Jlmmio. who ran into a
focuj of tho camera and leaped upon
Miss Tlckford with a shout of joy. "Do
' you like Ice cream?" shouted he, entirely
; unconscious of tho wrathful glances from
' the director and his staff. "Surely," re
plied Mary, laughing at the discomfort of
her coworkers. "What color?" demanded
Jlmmle. "lnk," sho exclaimed, entering
Into the spirit of what she supposed was
a little gamo on Jimmle's part. "I like
llkrltch, do you?" was the next Inquiry
from young Flynn, referring to that fa
mous candy made from tho julco of tho
licorice plant Upon an Immediate assur
ance from Mary that she also liked "11k
ritch," he disappeared like a flash, to the
peat relief of the bystanders. Half
an hour later In the midst of another sceno
hlch had been taken several times In or
or to get the best effect, Jlmmle again
appeared as It from the roof of the studio
and dropped Into the lap of "his girl" with
a amall box of pink Ico cream and n bag
of licorice, w'hereupon tho director threw

i got a quarter and spent every cent of
It for you," said Jlmmle, as they munched
tho remains of the licorice somo time later
For a man of seven to spend an entire
quarter on n girl is sure going to the ex
treme to proe his devotion. Yet it will
not go well with the Individual who do
nated this quarter If tho director should
learn of his Identity.
(Tlnnnlo nntl Mary and "A Toor Llttlo

week.

REAL RED BLOOD
FLOWS IN "THE
BARRIER"
All tfcn t liecr nnd skittles In puttlnR on
a real plcturo drama. That la, nil Isn't
ncIltiK, for tliero Is much tliat la real; at
least, that Is ttuo In "Tno Harrier," Ilex
Iloach's play of life on tlio last frontier
AI.ii.ka. When one sits In tho orchestra
and Hatches tho rinoothly movlnc scenes
romance, strugKles, llKlit, daring chances
passing easily by llttlo thought is Klvcn to
tho reality.
An Instance nf thli may bo cited In tho
scene In "Tho Harrier," where Humiloti lias
drawn a euu and got tho drop on Lieutenant
Meado Hurrrll. 'Poleon suddenly strikes
Hunnlon across the arm with a bottle filled
with "John Itarleycorii " 1'ndcr ordinary
conditions this hottlo would bo made of
paralllti, but tho hot weather melted tho
mnke-beeo bottlo and, as tho tceno was
laid far from a "stock" room, tho only
course left open was to use a Ronulno Klass
bottle In tho excitement of tho scene
"Poleon forgot tho property bottle's nhsetuc
nnd smote Hunnlon a terrific ctack with the
glass bottle The result w.is that tho latter
got a bad wound, nnd Inter when lie was
xtruck with tho butt of a gun and fell
to the lloor. the fragments of tho bottlo
cut his leg badly. In tho wrestling sceno
on tho befell between Hunnlon and 'Poleon
(both poweiful men) the match was gen
uine. No tenderness was shown by elthet
party, with the lesult that many bruises
wore counted on each contestant. Later
Hunnlon fell upon tho Jagged rocks no
carpet props, but nntiiro h own Invention
lie wns considerably lacerated. If one
watches the film closely lie, cannot help
observing tho genuineness of the action (not
acting). Through It nil olio never hears an
actor complain. Cow ni dice Is not tho stuff
of which inoNlng plcturo actors nro made.
They know that the scene will hac to be
gone through only two or three times In
order to be shbwn a million or more, nnd
they take tho big chanco every time In
the speaking drama the real thing could
not take place because If one were to bo
honestly choked almost Into Insensibility,
every night and nt a matinee or two. even
tually a headstone would adorn the plnjrr's
brow. Tho result has been that whore the
lugged sort of drama, sucn as "Tho Har
Her." Is filmed the weak-hearted, weak
hinged, weak-muscled actor has found his
wav Into the dlse.ml. In other words, play
ing a icd-bioodcd part requires an attor
with mlmson corpuscles In his veins, nnd
In "Tim Harrier" that's tho predominating
quality.
"Tho Harrier" comes to tho Chestnut
.Sltcet Opera House next Monday
