FINANCIAL NEWS
RALLIES OCCUR IN MANY STOCKS
AFTER EARLY ATTACKS BY BEARS
Professional Element Has Everything Its Own Way for a
Time During Initial Trading Reading Going
Into Strong Hands
High Points in Today's Financial News
Bears attacked stock in Wall street early, but brisk rallies followed in
many issues. Changes at end of day xocro irregular. The same was true
on the Curb. Short covering strengthened wheat after weakness. Cotton
cloyed higher. Netv York bank statement shotced increases in average and
actual loans, deposits and surplus. Hank clearings for week larger. Bar
silver lower.
NEW YORK, Feb. 24.
The bear traders found numerous Inventlves on which to base vigorous
ralde. nt frequent Intervals during fho first hour of business on tho Stock
Exchange. The list made by Lloyd George, published In tho press this morning,
prohibiting Imports into England of leather and other commodities furnished
reasons for selling many stocks llko Contrnl Leather, and, at tho samo time,
stories of freight congestion nnd food scarcity were taken as reasons for selling
many other Issue. Kor a time this professional element seemed to have
everything Its own -vrny.
One of tho bear traders mndo United States Steel common sell down from
106H to 106 VI. but It wns not long beforo that stock rallied to abovo 107,
recovering nil Its loss. Tho story was the samo In nearly nil tho other
active Issues.
Attacks wero made on stock after stock, causing lower prices in the first
hour, which wero In noarly all cases followed by good rallies beforo midday.
Naturally, the marine lames wero among tho heaviest of tho actlvo stocks,
Marino preferred falling to 6VA nnd Atlantic, Gulf and West Indies dropping
2 points to 89H, but these stocks also showed a good rallying tendency, nnd
beforo tho end of the half-day had recovered nearly all their declines.
There wero special movements In Heading nnd Now Haven. Tho bear
plungers made another drlvo nt Heading, forcing It down 1 point to 94V4. out
accumulation wos evident, and as soon as tho bear selling ceased the stock
made a good recovery. Tho Indications nro becoming more pronounced that
Heading has been steadily going Into strong hands.
Interest was concentrated to a great extent on tho expocted notion of tho
President, and Washington was looked to with a high degree of interest by
those who havo for a long time kept out of the market because of a deter
mlnatlon to have no speculative commitments until after tho status of the
international situation had beon definitely established.
Tho bond mnrkct was steady nnd business was on n comparatively small
scale. Most of tho changes wero to lower figures. New York Hallway Cs dropped
fiom 42 to 41H; Lackawanna Steel Ei sold nt 96 and 95?4. and there was a
moderately lower range established In Southern Hallway Issues. Anglo-French
Bt wore steady, with sales at 92 and 924.
PRICES ARE IRREGULAR ON THE CURB,
WITH MOST ISSUES AT LOWER LEVELS
NEW YORK, Feb. 24
There wero Irregular movements on the Broad Street Curb today, with
the majority of stocks selling at a lower level. Moements, howecr, were
irregular, and most of the trudlng, een In tho usually active issues, represented
simply scalping operations by some of the traders.
MIdvalo Steel ranged from 64 to 63W, w-lth late transaction-) nt B3&. Aetna
Explosives sold at 4 nnd 4 Submarine Boat was traded In at 24 U. and
Wright-Martin Aeroplane, nfler falling from 8 to S, recovered its loss.
Tho fluctuation In Jie oil stocks wore narrow Standard Oil of New
Jersey sold nt 695, 'Standard OH of N'ow York at 295 nnd J'ralrle ripe Line
at 327 Tho Independent oil shares wero generally quiet, Cosdcn Oil selling nt
14 and 14', Merrltt nt 17, Federal nt BU nnd fi, Oklahoma Froduclng nt
10H and I0& and Sinclair at B68 and B6H.
Most of these stocks weie Influenced In their market position by tho con
gestion which has Interfered with Interstate commerce to such an extent during
the last two weeks.
Mining stocks .were generally lower, nlthough United Verde was In falrlv
good demand, ndvanclng from 37' to 38. Magma told at 48',i to 48, and
Butte Copper and Zinc was traded In nt 9. Tho new motor stock on the Curb,
Redden M6tor, sold at 22 and 22H. .

NEW YORK COFFEE MARKET
NEW YORK, Feb. 24. The market for
coffeo futures opened 1 to 6 points lower
today. Trading on the call was moderately
active, with some of the offerings coming
from Wall street sources. Sales amounted
to about 7000 bags.
The fact that Qreat Britain has nro-
hlblted the Importation of coffee caused
further sharp breaks In futures after the
opening today, and soon after 11 o'clock
prices showed declines of about 15 points,
with trading active.
Tho Santos futures market showed sharp
declines, and coat and freights from Brazil,
though fairly steady at the close yester
day, were expected to show an easier ten
dency, due to lower freight rates and ample
tonnage. Tho local Bpot market was dull
and quotations were unchanged, Rio No. 7
being quoted at 9 He.

Majority of Local Issues Coming During Short Session
Show Advances Lake Superior Corporation an '
Exception, Declining a Little
Trading on the Philadelphia Stock ex
change did not show any material change
In the short session today over previous
days of the week. Very few stocks came
out on the tape in the two hours, and those
which were traded In made only fractional
changes. From the action of the market
It wau Inferred that traders, both In com
mission houses and on the floor of the
Stock Exchange, have ndopted the same
policy as Is being pursued In Wall street,
which Is a waiting one. The rank and file
does not care to carry any commitments
overnight, In view of possible developments
In our foreign relations, and the result Is
that transactions have dropped off to very
small proportions. . 1
An encouraging development today was
the betterment of prices of distinctly local
Issues. Whllo the change, as explained
nbove, wero not large, yet many of them
were on the upward side. The Improve
ment of the local stocks was not general,
however, but the fact that some of them
broke away from the downward move made
the Street feol better. Lake Superior Cor
poration stock was an exception. This
iBtue was a fraction lower all through the
session, and It was also tho most active.
This stock Is more or less under the In
fluence of the movements of slocks, tin-,
tlcularly the wnr-order variety, on the New
York Stock Exchange, because of the natur
of Its business, "
A stnnll gain was registered by Thlla
delphla Rapid Transit trust certificates"
but the turnover was only a little more than
BOO shares at the end of the first hour.
The Street doesnot expect this Issue, nor anr
other, In fact, to do very much until there
Is some definite development. Of course the
development which would help Transit
would be somo agreement on the new tran.
sit plans, but as yet the street Is not sur
what will be done.
Nothing more has beon heard of the plan
for raising new capital for the United Ga
Improvement Company, and In the absence
of any confirmation of the rumor of a ten
per cent stock allotment, which reached
the Street about n week ago, nothing much
can be expected of the Etock. In the short
session tdday It got up a little.
Lehigh Valley transit Issues did not corns
out on the tape during tho two hours Ne.
gotlatlons for a merger of utility proper,
ties, taking In the Lehigh Valley Transit
and other up-State 'properties, are under
stood to be progressing, but nothing definite
has been agreed ort.
STEEL OPERATIONS
ARE CUT DOWN
Officials Receive Reports of
Slight Improvement in
Railroad Situation
NEW TORK, Febt 24. Officials of many
eleel companies are considerably encour
aged as a result of some private reports of
a slight Improvement In the railroad situa
tion at various operating centers. While
this change for the better Is by no means
decided, it Is pointed out that conditions
have been so bad recently that any Im
provement, no matter how small, Is wel
comed That operations of steel companies re
cently had been affected to a greater extent
than was generally realized Is tho opinion
expressed by a representative of one of the
large companies. Not only did tne railroad
embargo and shortage of cars for shipments
cause mucii Inconvenience but the difficulty
of getting fuel, duo to the clogged-up con
dition of tho railroads, also was a factor
of some consequence.
There had been shut-downs In many sec
tions and several of the companies took ad
vantage of this by making repairs which
had become necessary as a result of the
capacity operations which had been carried
on for so long. In somo steel centers fur
naces were put out. fi3 the accumulations
were becoming burdensome, and the furn
aces were rellned and repaired so as to be
retaly to do their best when tho oppor
tunity arose.
Another factor In which Improvement has
hecn shown recently has been the weather.
The severe cold prevented high-rate opera
tions In various places, and oven It the
railroads could have handled all the possi
ble production of the mills, tho wintry con
ditions would not havo permitted capacity
w ork.
