tho Victoria, where Max makes his re-debut
Monday In "Max Comes Across," he has

Max was one of the flrrt to answer his
country's call, when hostilities began, N'ot
only did he relinquish his motion picture
career, out of which ho wan making a veri
table mint of money, to face death, but also
he financed his own equipment as a motor
dispatch bearer Kor eighteen months Lin
tier served In this capacity, braving the
perils of the shot-torn battlefields to deliver
his orders to tho front line trenches. His
nutomobllc was blown to bits by shrapnel,
finally, and Max was transferred to the
artillery service. In this he scred until
he was desperately wounded at the battle
of tho 'Alnc A bullet pierced his lung.

of death for several months.
Reports spread throughout I'arls that
Max was dead. Ills name was listed among

REAL MINE TOWN
IN "BARRIER"
The rude mining camp In willed much
of the action of "The Harrier," the new
Hex Heach film due at the Chestnut March
fi, lakes place-In the Identical tonn which
Ilex Heach, the author, helped to found,
nnd tho laws of which he nnd his fellow
miners enacted and executed.
The laws related chiefly to staking nnd
registering mining claims, but the miners'
court dispensed rcady-mado Justice to all
who canto before It, whether It had any
law for Its guidance or not
Mr Heach tells of a squaw who appenred
before the court and demanded n divorce,
for excellent reasons, from her white bus
band. ThP court, after gravely consider
ing the evidence, granted the desired lellef
from the galling bonds of matrimony; so
the squaw, seeing how easy It was, de
manded the furniture which had been the
Joint property of the now disrupted house
hold. The court, probably on tho principle
of letting the tall go with the hide, gave
her the furniture as well ns tho divorce.
