COAL MARKET STRONGER;
WEATHER RETARDS MINING
Difficulties Between Clothing Manufac-
,turefr!and Operators Aro Virtually
Ended Business Generally Largo
Greater strength has been uhqwn during
the last week In the bituminous coal mar
ket, according to the review of trade by It.
O. Dun & Co. Tho report also asserts that
the demand has continued quite heavy, but
that, owing; to the cold weather of the first
part of the week, the miners did not work
wor several days in some mines.
Further the review says )n part:
"Fad-mount gas coal is bringing from
4.60 to H.75 a ton at the mines: Western
Maryland, 3.C5, to J3.85: Somerset, $3.C5
to S3.SC: Geortfs'a Creek' 11.23 to 11.70;
Quemahomlng. 14 to 34.25 a ton. Some
.contracts are being placed, but, owing to the
uncertainty of the marker, aro noVgenerally
solicited. In tho anthracite mtrket the
demand has been heavy and in a number of
cases coal has been sold at a premium.
. "In the lumber trade prices are consider
ably higher and a fair volume of business Is
being done, although deliveries north of
Newport News are considerably handi
capped by embargoes.
"The labor situation has affected the bust,
nets somewhat among the shirt manu'
facturers and also manufacturers dt men's'
and boys' "clothing during tho last couple
of weeks: The clothlmr nlanufacturcrs.

Market operations on the Philadelphia
Steele Kxchanso today represented nothing
more than a shifting of holdings by a few
traders In commission houses and on the

nnd the. General disposition today was to
hold orf until there Is some development
which would make for a movement of any
proportion either way. The slackcnlm?

Changes in prices today were meaning
less. As a rule thero were no wide move
