NEW YOHK. .Inn. 27.
Trading In today's slock market was nlmost entirely Influenced by tho pub
lished statements tn regard to tho expectation that tho flcrmnn Kmporor Would
made some announcement nt his birthday celebration tlint would ho accepted lis
a pew peace proposition find lniiko tho approach of tho cessation of hostilities
seem close nt hand. Tho stocks wore for sale at the opening In TnlHy largo
volume, but specialists In nearly all tho important issues, lllto fnltod States Steel
common, said that tho supply camu almost wholly from tho operators persistently
commuted to tho boar sldo.
t'nlled States Steel common, under this pressure, declined from tut to II3.
but quickly recovered this loss. The Marino Issues dropped off about 2 points,
with brisk rallies before the ond of the first hour, nnd similar losses nnd recov
eries were noted In tho copper stocks and In tho minor steel Industrials.
When tho early forenoon passed without any new announcement from tho
German Capitol there wus n disposition to buy back some of the stocks sold at
and just after tho opening, hut taken altogether tho deallnns on bnth the declines
nnd rallies were m professional In character as to be without slftnlUcnnce and
simply Indicated the shifting of the position of tho speculative eloment on the tloor.
The short Interest was undoubtedly Increased by tho early selling, hut those
committed to tho short sldo generally hold to the view that some development
might occur oor Sunday that would permit covering next week nt lower levels.
The I'nitcd States Steel meeting, to lie held on Tuesday, wus looked forward
to with a high degree of Interest, but ns no authoritative statement has been
made by any olio of the management of dividend intentions all those who Were
concerned on the long side could do was to hope that recent predictions might
como through.
