the Canadian Census OUlcc. placing the
final vleld of wheat In .llil at 220,307.000
bushels against its estimate of 159.123,000
bushels issued last October, caused a great
deal of selling of what today and the mar
ket weakened. Unfavorable tralllc condi
tions and a poor demand for export also
were against an upward movement.
New buying was limited, there being
little demand from the public. IPt and pro
fessional traders were unanimously bearish
ami worked for lower prices. There wris

NEW YOIUv, Jan. 20- Operations of the
New York Federal Reserve Kanlt this week
were responsible for the 'first loss In cash
that has been disclosed on tho known move
ments of money In several weeks. The in
stitutlon mentioned had a credit nt the
Clearing Houso for the week of $19,500,000
and the bank's loss to the Subtreasury
$2,330,000, ft total loss of $31,890,000.
Against this is to be deducted a gain In
cash from the Interior of 5CS02.480. leav
ing the net result a loss of $15,597,511.
The New York Federal tteserve Honk ran
large credit at the ClearlPK House every,
day of the week but one. It was these
'Derations that were mainly responsible for
losses by the banks in weeks previous to
the recent succession of Increases which
brought the total surplus reserve up to a
point encouraging expectation of a new
high record in the near future.
The week before the local banks gained
on the known movements $30,880,594, and
the week still previous there was a cash
gain of $60,701,000. Last Saturday the
actual bank statement showed un Increase
In cash of $35,397,000 and surpluj reserve
stood at $202,472,830. C
The banks this week received, gross from
the country $8,880,297 and shipped $2.-588,8U-
-Tb previous week the receipts
were $13,492,853 and the shipments $3,.
