ALLY OFFIREMEN
Founder of Bibld Classes to
Enlist Co-workers in
v . Campaign
BIG BOOST TO CAUSE
Will Lay Question Before Direc
tors of Organization Bear
ing His Nnmo
Anthony J. Drexcl Diddle, founder of the
Bible Class movement which benra lit
Tiaine, has entered tho lists as a champion
of tho firemen of l'hllndeltihln In (he cam
palcm they are waging on liehalf of moro
tolerable working condltlona And an In
crease In salary that wilt cnnlilo them to
keep nbreim wltli the rcnulreirtentft of their
position.
Mr. Diddle In hlit enthusiastic support nf
Uie firemen' movement, promises not only
his own enemetlo personality, but to call
Into nctlon tho united potency of the various
divisions of the Drexel Diddle Bible Classes
throunhout tho cty.
In making nnnotinccment of his Intention
to tsK up wo campaign on behalf of thn
firemen Mr. Diddle wild!
"I have beon greatly Impressed by the
lory of the firemen and the living con
ditions they nre forrwl to endure. I hnvo
always been Interested In the life of n fire
man, but until Innt Stmilny cvcnlnir, when
1 Attended n lllhln clnss meeting In Holy
Tflnlty Pnrlah House, I did not rentlze Just
What n 1'hllndelphla flrcmnn had to con
tend With. Lieutenant Jumen ICckcrt, of
Engine Company No. 1G, wan ono nf the
speakers nt that meeting, The facta nil
bo related them mnilo a deep Impression
upon me. I felt that no ono would be
lieve, unions ho had looked Into the mnttor
na I have, that conditions such nn hnvn
beon brought to light ninca this campaign
began could really exist. They certainly
should not be allowed to continue, and t am
going to do everything within my power to
brine about a bettering of tho firemen's con
dition. 'Not only nm I going to work person
ally'townrd this end, but I Intond to Inter
est tho members of tho Drexol Diddle Illblo
classes In tho campaign, for I believe It In
a matter which thoy rightfully should talto
tip In the Intcrost of Christianity and a
betterment of toclal conditions In our city.
"1 purpose lnylng tho causa of tho lire
men before our dlrcotors at their nicotine-,
bo that they In turn can brim; It ( tho
attention of their respective ill v sums nml
kayo the several ward commlttocn nil over
th, city lake action In the campaign
"I was one of the signer to the citizens'
petition which wns presented to Mayor
Smith last month nml which In st II In his
hands for conitdcrntlan. While ho has not
committed lilmi'.lf on tho subject. I nm
assured that thn firemen hnvo such public
upport and have nrousnl Interest In their
behalf to so great an extent that they nro
virtually certain to obtain what they nro
coking and which they nro Justly entitled
to. An for myself, 1 must say thnt t feel
it an honor' to be enrolled In tho tllslln
Biilshed company of slgiicrH to thnt peti
tion which went to tho Mayor, and I do
not think that the clty'n chief magistrate
can fall to be fnvorably Impressed by tho
weight and Inlluence of the IiusIiich.i men
and other representative cltlcnnn who volun
tarily Attached tho.r names to thnt appli
cation. It was n roster worthy of tho emm
In which It was enlisted, and tho subse
quent demonstration of public sentiment on
behalf of our firemen Is ample proof thnt
popular demand Ilea back of their efforts."
Another prominent ndvocntn of tho lire
men's cnmpalgn for every fourth day oft
duty and a salary Increase Is the Itov. Dr.
John T. Iteeve, who Is pnMnr of tho Kourth
Presbyterian Church, I-'yrty-se'vonlh and

Hugh Illaclt, former Uccelverof Taxos, and
for many yearn a leading figure In the Re
