FARMER SMITH'S
MY DOLL
Dearest Children Ono of my pleasant duties every night is kissing a dolt
good-night. The poor thing has been very ill with typhoid fever and all her
hair camo out or off, and I had to tako her to a dolls' hospital, where sho wns
well taken care of by kind nurses and doll doctors, until alio was able to como
homo to her llttlo mother.
This all reminds mo of my doll. Her namo was Scotia. I thought of her
quito frequently in aftor life. Nova Scotia, I think, means NEW SCOTLAND.
I often think of her when I see hollyhocks, for ono day I decided that it wns
time for Scotia, my doll, to depart this life, nnd so I buried her under tho holly
hocks in tho back yard. I think jtho came to life after that, because I can
remember to this duy tho man who told mo that BOYS should not play with
dolls and ho teased me so I parted with Scotia for good.
If my doll is now in doll heaven I hope sho will know why I played with
ono doll when I was n boy. I do not think I could kiss n dear dolly so fondly
every night now vcro it not for tho fact that I once had n doll of my own,
I do not think I could write so interestingly (to myself) about dolls if 'I had
not played with Dolly Scotia.
Perhaps Scotia knew that I was going to ho a children's1 editor and talk to
hundreds of thousands of children EVKRY WEEK DAY.
I am much obliged to Scotia nnd tho dear dolls who get a kiss every night.
If any of my boy friends havo dolls, I hope they will show this talk to those
bad, naughty persons who tease THEM. It will show them that onu grown man
is not nshamedof having played with a doll nnd HE is successful, for successful
simply means being in lovo with your work. "Blessed is that man (or woman)
who has found his work." PARMER SRIITH, Children's Editor.
