of Refinancing Plan Is Assured '
The statement of President Joseph n.

of each class of certificates had been de
posited under the refinancing plan, nnd as
suring the auecesi of the plan, was reflected
In demand for Philadelphia Klectrlc Rtock

The stock ndvnhccd to a new high price
soon after the opening, roachlng 30 a share,
an advance of i. ns compared with the

PIG IRON AND TEEL
QUOTATION'S SOAR
Old Material Also Advances
During Most Rapid Rise Since
Upward Move Began
Quotations for pig Iron, somo steel prod
ucts nnd old material advanced moro rap
idly during the last week than probably In
any similar period since tho present upward
trend In prices started. Steel rnlls wcro
the lenders In the upturn, having been ad
vanced JD per ton to fctS for Uessemcr
stnted seotlon and 40 for open hearth as
previously announced. Other advances were
from J1.B0 to 15 per ton In billets and JG
In wlro rods.
Although pig Iron waa put up materially,
It Is the consensus of opinion In the trade
that tho end Is not In sight. In virtually
ovcry section of this country thero Is an
nbnormnl demand for Iron and the advancos
caused by this demand ranged from $1
to $2 per ton. A significant featuro of
tho market Is that the seller who could
supply spot would havo perhaps somo dif
ficulty In getting n buyer. At least that Is
tho Impression, becnuso of tho fact that all
tho prospccllvo buyers are looking for
future deliveries to tnko care pf their known
requirements. ' '
Thero Is a general belief among users of
pig Iron thnt thero will bo a scarcity next
year, and this has led to tho extraordinary
futuro demand.
Scrap steel and Iron can bo sold again
at higher figures, the advances ranging
from BO cents to $2 per ton. These levels
havo been caused by tho fact that there g
llttlo scrapping being done, duo to tho diffi
culty of 'Steel and Iron users getting now
material, nnd tho fcld equipment Is being
repaired nnd used to a greater extent than
over bofore.
Scattered advances nlso wero made In
finished steel products during tho last week,
sheets being tho leaders In this department.
No. 28 black, at Pittsburgh, bolng up S3 a
ton, while galvanized sheets, No. 28, at
tho same center, wcro advanced $G per ton.
Probnbly tho greatest intorcst wns nt
t.ichcd to tho advanco In rails, hut It was
only considered natural that" prices should
be put up In vlow of tho fact that other
products which could be rolled at rail mills
were showing profits of 60 to 200 per cent
over rails.
Inquiries are In tho market for large lots,
with some good export business In sight.

NEW YORK COFFEE MARKET
NEW YOIUC Nov. 18. The market for
cofteo futures,'opened steady today at an
advance of 3 to 6 points. Trading on tha
call was fairly active, with sales amount
ing to 6760 bags. t
At 11 o'clock the market held steady on
outsldo speculative buying, mostly of the
distant positions, with but Uttlo selling pres
sure In evidence. There was some switch
ing of December to May at a 'premium of
32 points, and December to March at 21
points.
The Santos futures market was a little
steadier, and the fact that Brazilian ship
pers falltfd to reduce their offers seemed
to curtail anything like free selling here.
Tho local spot market was quiet, with a
poor demand. Quotations wero unchanged.

NEW TOItK, Nov. 18. Irregular pr!e
changes wcro recorded nt the opening oa
tho Cotton Exchango this morning. D.
comber wns down 10 points, and .Unuiry 1
points, but other months wcro 4 to 8 points
higher.
Thero wns a good general demand for
the lato months, southern Interests, com.
mission houses and room traders being ac-1 '
kiTu vunn.
Tho selling camo from scattered eoureei,
with Liverpool probably leading.
Weather conditions In. tho South went
clear. Temperatures were slightly higher,
Tho market turned strong shortly aftv
the opening on active demand from Liver
pool, several of tho prominent spot houia
nnd Southern nnd Western interests. Offer.
Ings wero not particularly heavy until Jan
uary had sold up to 20.60c, or 21 points
nbovo tho close of yesterday, nnd within
4 points of the highest pried of the season.
Later positions advanced to within about
a dozen points of Friday's high level.
Then heavy realizing by earlier buyers
nnd by longs who hnd failed' to take id.
vantago of the bulge yesterday carried ti
list down nbout 20 points, with January
selling nt 20.40c
There was much reactionary talk arounJ
the floor, but tho selling appeared to soma
chiefly from tho longs. Southern spot new j
showed llttlo chnngo, although some wires
suggested that offerings abovo the 20a level
were moro liberal.
It was felt by many In the local market
that this cotton would have to be digested,
nnd that the futures market would fluctu;
nte vory Irregularly during the period re
quired for Its absorption.
The recolpts of cotton at the ports for
the- day were estimated at 36,000 biles,
compared with 62.328 bales last wesk 1M
