dam. Rogers says the Broadway publlo
Is altogether too speedy for any normal en
tertainer. "I get my jokes out of the newspapers,"
said Rogers. "Not out of the funny col
umns, but out of the latest news. At the
ma,ttnee I pull stuff based on tho noon edi
tions of the afternoon papers. Well, before
the evening performance all that matinee
stuff is too stale for the audience, so I use
the sporting editions, finals and home Is
sues. Dut by the time the Midnight Frolic
starts, these late evening Jokes are also
stale, so I get the first edition of the Morn
ing Telegraph and make my monologue on
that I buy more newspaper extras than
any man In the world, because I've made
up my mind no Joke can get over after It Is
six hours old. A lot of clever writers have
tried to fix me up with acts, but I can't get
away with them. The publlo Just won't
allow me to learn a part I've got to make
It tip as I go along. I don't know why they
ride me that way, but they do. I'm going
t6 try some day-old gags In Philadelphia,
though, Just for an experiment"
PHILHARMONIC HAS BIG
PERSONNEL
One hundred and nine musicians will be
on the stage of the Academy of Muslo when
the New York Philharmonic Orchestra
plays Its first Philadelphia concert In years
next Monday evening. The orchestra play
ers number 107, divided Into a strlhg sec
tion of 59, the Incomparable wood-wind
choir of twenty-one soloists and a brass
chorus of twenty more. The remaining
even are the tympanl and other percus
sion players, and the two harpists. In
addition to the orchestra players them
selves will be Josef Strankky, their con
ductor, who makes his debut in this city
after having led the Philharmonic forces
ever since the death of Qustav Mahler, and
the soloist Sascha Jacobtnoff, the young
Philadelphia violinist, who returns to his
home city after a career In Europe. Jacob
lnoft Is better known to his friends here as
Sasoha Jacobson. He will play the Brahms
D major concerto.
Of the three orchestral numbers, two are
new to Philadelphia: Dvorak's "Fourth
Symphony," In Q major, Op. 88, and Max
Reger'a "Variations and Fugue for Or
chestra on a Theme by Mozart." The re
maining number U the prelude to Wagner's
"Die Melsteralnger."
