FARMER SMITH'S RAINBOW CLUB
MUSIC
Wo may say, my dears, that music Is a comparatively modern invention.
Tho gods in olden times did not play upon pianos, nor did Nero play the
talking machine while a city was burning.
I want you to consider how many different waya 'there are today of bring
ing our music to us.
The other day I saw tho pupila march down stairs and out into the achool
yard to the muaic of a phonograph. t
What beautiful orderl
When I was a boy and the bell rang for dlamlssal, there waa a wild acramblo
to eee who would reach the front door first.
There is no excuso for not having muaic in your home today talking ma
chine's and. phonographs are sold from one dollar (I don't know how good they
are) up, and records from ten cents up.
I want to talk to you more and more about your music I want you to
love it, becauae it will make your life happier.
Lovingly, FARMER SMITH, Children's Editor.

PAIXTIKO WILLIE'S XOSK
By Farmer Smith
"I do wish that engine would stop making
so much noise out there," said Willie
Wideawake, as he listened nnd listened to
a locomotive pufllng and panting In the
midnight air. "I wish "
nut Willie was fast asleep before he could
finish the sentence.
"You must put something In the picture
to .keep your eyes company," aald the Good
Dream Fairy, who had not been to see Wil
li for a long, long time.
Willie hopped out of bed and aoon waa
seated In front of his canvas, ready to
paint.
"Don't you think you should have n
painter's coat something to keep the paint
from getting on your pajamas T" asked the
Qood Dream Yulry.
Willie looked down and there was a coat
already covering his pajamas. He did not
stop to even wonder how It got there so
many things had happened to him.
"Look, Fairy dear, I am going to paint
my noso right Into the picture to keep my
eyes company "
Dab, dab, dab J
AH was silent Willie looked at what he
thought was -going to be a nose and It
seemed nothing more than a daub.
"Mercy 1" h exclaimed. "Can that be
my noaeT Why, I thought I painted two
holes Juat Ilka I have In my nose. Oh,
dear I what can be tha matter?"
"MatterT" came a voice that sounded like
some one talking through his nose. "You
breathe through your mouth so much I get
very little uaa You might just aa well be
without me and breathe with your mouth
just aa It la '
"Are you fcolng to paint thlnga as they
are or aa you want them to bar' asked the
nasal voice. '
"I am going to paint them aa I know
they are." .
"Wrong, wrong you must paint thlnga
from your Imagination all palntera de
leaving out the points that are disagreeable.
Paint, the beautiful leave the ugly to the
photographer,'
The pnoiograpnerr exclaimed Willie,
"Yes, the photographer, His camera
takes In ever) thing, just aa It is. It takes
a picture of a grand cathedral and also the
beggar on thd steps. The painter pictures
th cathedral only and leaves out the beg
gar on the steps."
Wonderful I" exclaimed Willie.
