NW YORK, Nov. 10.
Wall street has seldom had presented to It such a record of wild trading ns
raa. mado In today' stock market. After uncertainty nt the opening there wero
violent advances In som stocks, while others broke sharply and the day's trading
Included the making of new high records In an unusually large number nf
issues. The greatest gain was shown In Gulf States Steel, which roue 25 points
to 130. New high records were mado In Republic Iron and Btcel, Utah Copper,
International Paper, American Writing Paper preferred and Central leather.
Tfcese stocks made gains during the first half hour, ranging from 3 to 6 points,
ant although they receded sharply were always In urgent demand and made
Wrlsk rallies after every decline.
United States Steel common was closely watched for Indications as to the
trend of the general list Opening sales ranged from 124',1 to 123, against 124
at the close yesterday, but after advancing to 125 It moro than lost this gain.
Most of the transactions In the standard Issues were governed by political
nthUslasm or chagrin. Most of the leading stocks were supplied In large blocks
by Important Interests that were Identified with the Republican side of the presi
dential campaign, while the heaviest buying In United States Steel common was
by Baruch Brothers, who took 25,000 shares In tho first few minutes.
The copper stocks were exceptions to this political Influence. Nearly all
these shares were aggressively bought because of the adance of tho price to
across 32 cents a pound, and this condition In the metal trade was responded to
with an advance of moro than 6 points in Utah Copper to the new high record of
US, while Anaconda rose from 97 Vb to above 101 and proportionate gains were
made In Inspiration, Chlno and Ray Consolidated, with movements In those
stocks Including moro new high tecords.
International Paper, with an ndvanco to 75V4, was another record breaker,
but on the advance It was supplied in such volume as to react 4 points within n.
few minutes. Republic Iron and Steel came into prominence In tho late trading,
advancing more than 3 points to the new high record of 83. Tho trading nt tho
end cSf tho day was marked by intense nerousness, with stocks quick to respond'
to any new Incentive on either tho buying or tho selling aide.
There were heavy transactions again In tho bond crowd, with American
Smelting Securities ,6s tho most prominent feature, advancing on very' large pur.
chases from 111 to 113. Tho dealings In Anglo French 6s were on an enormous
scale, most of tho Bales being mado around 95. Lackawanna Steol Ei were also
traded In In large blocks.
Copper Sells at 32 tf Cents, a Record Price; France After 225,000,000 Pounds
NEW YORK, Nov. 10. A salo of copper metal for delivery late this month,
Which is lrtually considered spot, has been mado at 32U cents a pound. This
l the highest price at which tho metal has ever sold. Leading producers nnd
dealers have made further advances In these prices. First quarter copper ls
scarce, some of tho Interests being out of tho market entirely and the best quota
tion available Is 31 cents or better. For the second three months of next year
the quotation H now at 30 cents Hat and sales hao been mado at that figure.
This compares with 29; to 29H cents asked by these sellers yesterday nnd
pul thelrj price up to tho level named by less Important producers Franco has
oome Into tho copper market with an Inquiry for 226,000,000 pounds of tho metal
to bo delivered during the last half of next year. This probably Is tho second
largest copper Inquiry cor received, haxlng been exceeded only by the big 448,-600,000-pound
order recolved from tho Allien about two months ago.
