While tha big vessel waa fighting her way through a hurricane on the night of October 28 lire suddenly marled In one of the for ward compartments. The crew fought the flames for more than five hours under the direction of Captain Young. Tone of water were poured Into the hold, causing the ship to list to such an extent that the bowa dipped Into the sea. For many hours the Bast Point floundered as an empty cask. Several members of the crew volunteered to enter the burning compartment In an effort to cut a way for the auction hose.
