FARMER SMITH'S RAINBOW CLUB
STRENGTH FOR THE WEAK
My Dear ChildreR I wish today to call your attention to just two sayings:
One "My parents do nothing for me." Two "My parents do everything for
me."
Let us go back t9 nature and sec what happens there.
Tho mother bird pushes her darling out of the nest and the little bird flics,
too. The way to learn is by trying!
Suppose Mrs. Fish tiied to read to her little son the directions for swim
mingwould the dear little fellow learn?
Not much.
Some day your parents will be gone. This is not a prophecy, for all parents
go away sooner or later.
It is then we know their value.
Listen to what a wise man says:
"If a parent does everything for a child, tho child probably will never do
anything for himself. It is Nature's plan sho seems to think that no one needs
strength excepting tho struggler, and being kind, she comes to the rescue; but
the man who puts forth no effort remains a weakling to the end."
Lovingly, FARMER SMITH, Children's Editor.
P. S. I wioh you would put the above quotation in your scrapbook.
WHERE PASTE CAME FROM
, By Farmer Smith
Handsome Harry, tho pawr dolt, thought
Oraceful dertrude wu so bright to know
where paper dolls came from that he
thought and thought In an effort to Hnd
qut where paste came from. Did not their
Little Mistress use paste all the time!
He, Handsome Harry, would And out
where paste came from and then he would
be bright like araceful dertrude, who
knew where paper dolls came from.
One night when all was still he crept Into
the bl$r library and found a book which
tpld everything yes, everything In the
vyorld, except one thing, and that one thing
had never been told In any book, and that
one thing was, nhere paste came from.
However, Handsome Harry was not to be
outdone an.d no he went to tho paste pot
which was on the desk In the library and
said;
"Oh, Paste Pot, live' forever I Tell me
where paste came from."
The lid slowly uncovered from the paste
pot and up came the brush. "I know where
paste came front," said the brush, clearing
Us throat.
Tell me then, that I may be as bright
as Graceful artrude," replied Handsome
Harry.

no grass on the earth and the ground was
bald like your Uncle Jimmy, there lived
on the Edge ot the World a very, very
strange woman who had an only son whom
she called "Paste." No one had ever heard
of that name before. '
The only trouble with Paste was, he
could not stop talking he talked and he
talked and (t seemed to his poor mother
that he never would stop.
One day she became so tired of his talk
ing that she took some dough which she
was making and plastered It over poor
Paste's mouth and
HE NBVEIl COULD OPEN HI8 MOUTH
AOAIN,
The poor boy's mother called upon all
the wise men In that part of the world, but
none of them could tell her what to do,
BUT one of these wise men discovered that
flour mixed with water made a. sticky sub
stance which would hold things together,
and when he went back to his own part of
the world he mixed some flour and water
and made something which he called
"paste," after the boy whose mother had
shut his mouth with the material with
which she mile her bread.
And from that time even to now, this
very minute, this mixture baa always been
called vpaste."
This, then. Is the story the brush In the
paste pot told Handsome Harry and he told
It word for word ,Ut Ckacef u) Oertrqda ad
