Condition In the steel market siow no
chang Manufacturers continue to decline
to take business and consumera are still
clamoring to place their orders. Advaiicet
In prices show no signs of letting up. In
fact, some further upturn are likely, a
the demand for virtually all, products Is
larger than the possible supply, and under
these circumstances the buyers are bidding
against each other In their efforts to getj
steel.
Some handsome premiums have been of
fered and paid to smaller producing con
cerns which have favored deliveries on vari
ous products, and every steel plant la this
cotmtry Is being operated to capacity.
Weather cond.tlons 'during October were
more favorable for uninterrupted wcu-k than
In any of the three previous months, and,
according to present Indications, November
and December also will be rushed, so far
aa output la concerned
Among the advances In finished Iron nnd
steel during the last week were' the fol
lowing: Iron bars at Pittsburgh, $2 a
ton to 2.85 centa a pound ; Iron bars at Chi
cago, 12 a ton to 2.40 cents a pound; skelp,
grooved steel at Pittsburgh, and skelp,
sheared steel at tho same center, 12 a ton
each, to 2.70 cents and 2.80 cents n pound,
respectlt ely, and No. 28 gahanlzed sheets,
at Pittsburgh, $1 a ton to 1.00 cents a
pound. ,
As stated heretofore there Is a heavy de
mand for all classes of materials. Domes
tic users aro purchasing all tho material
they can get and contracting far In ad
vance, and this demand Is augmented by
the abnormally large buying from abroad.
France, England, Russia and Italy In the
order named are the leaders In the export
buying, and the tonnage Involved In the
orders already placed and those pending
are stated In the trade to be enormous.
