NEW YORK, Oct 21. Business was sur
Vrlslngly small on the Cotton Kxchange
this morning and tn sharp contrast with
' the recent activity. An accumulation of
e'evernlght buying ordefs on the extended
frosts In the South caused a steady tone
at (He start, with advances ranting from 2
to 9 points. '
Commission housej and some southern'
Interests were buyers, but the supply was
iulte large, coming from Wall street and
some important room .operators. Liverpool
old January and purchased March, both
fi a moderate scale.
After the early demand was satisfied the
.pressure Increased, although trading did not
increase materially. There was no new
buy)ng following the call, and as, a result,
prices cased rather rapidly, showing de
clines of 9 to 17 points, the later in De
cember, at the end of the nrst fifteen min
utes ot business.
This morning's map slfowed frost In
South Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennes
see Alabama, Louisiana. North Carolina,
Georgia, Mississippi and western Florida.
Temperatures were lower virtually at all
reporting stations. There was no rainfall
in the growing sections
Sharp rallies occurred near the close.
Part of the Improvement was due tn a
rumor that the National dinner's figures
wculd be 7,450,000 bales, whereas a report
earlier In the week Indicated 7,710.000 bales.
Thero was also buying by spot houses on
tronger news from the South and vigorous
covering on the part of local shorts. Final
prices were at about the top for the day
rand 10 to 17 points net higher. The market
Liverpool wda closed.
. The receipts of cotton at the ports for the
eWiy- were estimated at 30.000 bales, rem-
. pared with 40,184 bales 'last week, 39,398
bales last year and .6,829 bales in 1914.

CHICAGO. Oct. 21. The wheat market
was Irregular today and, after climbing
near the top 'prices for this movement. It re
acted and dropped below yesterday's close.
The weakness resulted from profit-taking
and warnings of commission houses against'
overenthuslasm on the buying side because
of the recent spectacular advances.
Cxcltement was reported it Quenos A'res,
where prices yesterday Jumped 6ic to
7J4. No confirmatory advices of rain came
from Argentina, although conditions there
were unsettled, Crop news from the north
and center remained unfavorable and It
was said that the yield In the north would
be small. There Is a chance for Improve
ments elsewhere.
The market at Liverpool was'qu'et with
apot unsettled. Official British offers for
wheat cargoes were 3d lower this morning
than they were yesterday. 'Good world's
shipments for the weeK were expected, a
larger amount going to ihe United King,
dom.
Kxports from India during the period
nere extlmated at l.SOOftoo bushels, nearly
all to Oreat Britain, Crop news from Aus
tralla was favorable.
The receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth
toady were 3(5 cars, against 1631 cars a
ytar ago! at Winnipeg, GDI cars, compared
with 1899 cars: at Chicago, SI cars, con
trasted with 100 cars.
After opening steady, corn and oats
dropped below yesterday's close on, con
siderable selling, Trade was fairly active.
The receipts of corn here today wero 63
car j and oi oats 201 cars.
Corn at Liverpool was strong on further
unfavorable crops reports from Argentina.
