ClUOAno, Oct li. -Wheat was Irreaulsr
today, but closed unohanited to A little
hither. An Initial decline, due to a selllnr
movement brought about by private cables
Indleatlnr beneficial rains In Arcintlna.was
followed y (Uinneu.
The reooTery was due to late dispatches
from Arcentlne neiertlna thaV the moisture
had been too light In Important areas and
that surplus reserves would probably be
small In any event.
An atcellant buying; movement developed
on the setback and the lossts were more
than recovered. Later the market gave
ground on realising, only to more up again
on covering.
The demand tor the cash article was
good.
Operations were not extensive, pending
further developments In the political situa
tion and the export position.
Commenting on the step taken by Oreat
ilrltaln to Inture Its supplies, 11. P. Hnow
said that the matter could not be left
to private enterprises owing to the pos
sibility that larga quantities or wheat
now locked up In certain exporting coun
tries might become available through mili
tary operations, caualnit Importers to be
unwilling to hold moro stock thsn ab
solutely necessary
Mr. Snow expressed the op'.nlon that the
stoit forecasts tho bulldlntr up by the llrlt
lah Government of reserves for all even
tualttles and creater than private enterprise
would dare do In the face of the possible
npenlng of the rUrrianMles.
To build such resarves," he esld. "they
will get all possible from the colonies, but
as the North Atlantic voyage Is shortest
and safest our wheat will be taken for
steady current supply and the long voyage
from Australia nnd Argentina. If tlio latter
has nny, will bo used In building up the
safety reserve."
lie said that before the end of the season
Rurope would require every bushel that lan
be sparsd from every country.
A shortsge of cars Is curinlllng the move
ment. Thousands of empties In bod condi
tion are stsndlng on side tracks throughout
the (train belt.

Prices Are Irregular United
Motors Loses Early Gain '
Through Profit-Taking
NI1W 70RK. Oct. IS. Trading on the
Curb showed an Irregular tone all through
the day, with early advances In some Im
portant lasues followed by pressure against
many stocks nnd with a majority of the
active Issues showing declines at the end.
There was another brisk upturn In United
Motors pn which that stock rose over 8
points to above 89, but the movement wne
not maintained. Whan profit-taking was
attempted a substantial recession occurred.

substantial gains In the first half of the
day, with these advances more than lost
after noon.
Some of the munition stocks were marked
up to higher prices without creatine any
outside Interest nnd there were forced up
turns In a few of the Independent oil stocks
which attracted attention only from brokers
executing both the buying and selling or
ders. Standard Oils continued In brisk demand,
with Ohio Oil advancing 18 points tb 821.
There wss a vigorous demsnd, too, for
Charcoal Iron because of attention attracted
to the fact that that Is the largest producer
of charcoal, wood alcohol and acetallne In
this country and Is adding largely to Its
facilities.
Kathodlon Bronte preferred declined
early In the day to 9, the lowest price that
stock has touched In a long period.

mand, with sales at 3 and 14.
