NEW YORK. Oct. 10. Trading on the
Broad Street Curb had returned to normal
conditions over the night, and today the
market showed a strong tone, with many
Issues In brisk demand at advancing prices.
The supply of stocks was scant, and on
that account most Interest was attached
to. trading In other tsauos than those which
had formerly been market features.
One of the new shocks on the Curb,
United Alloy Steel, was the moat prominent
feature, being heavily dealt In and ad
vancing from 49U to 51H. Submarine
was also active and .strong, moving up from
4JH to 4V1.
Charcoal Iron preferred reflected the In
fluence of the dividend declaration laat
yeek and waartraded In at 7 H to 7.
There was renewed demand also for Zlno
Concentrating, which sold at 5. Consol
idated Arirona became active and strong,
with the transactions on an unusually large
scale at 1H and IK.
The agreement made between Dundee
Arlsona and United Verde extension Inter
ests continued an Incentive for a persistent
accumulation of Dundee Arizona stock at
around 2. City of Paris bonds also showed
a better tone with sales at 08 H and 93,
Tennessee Copper rights were quoted for
the first time at 2 to 2. Mldvale Steel
was fairly active, with sales at 67 H to
Mft. American Sumatra, which haa been
dull for a long time, was unusually active
and was traded In at 22 to 25.
Aetna Explosives advanced from 10 H to
114, and galas were made In Dutterworth,
Maxim Munitions and Lake Torpedo,

news from Argentina overshadowed the

market today and the tone was strong, with
December leading;. The ndtlcea from the
republic were the worst reported this sea
son. No rain was noted ntul the area suf
fering from drought was Increased.
Tho opinion was expressed that heavy
losses would soon be recorded. Locusts
were said to be spreading and causing
alarm In Hante Fe and Cordoba. Trices nt

that the llrltlah Government had officially
announced Its decision to take over the
whole business of Importing wheat, the

bulls.
The buying throughout tho session was
of an excellent character. Many of yes
terday's sellers reinstated what they had

on tho part of farmers In many localities

Tho marltet at Liverpool, while very
firm, was lifeless pending the Oovernm-nfs
announcement on the commandeering mat
ter. Argentine freight rates declined fs

Shipments for the week were expwrted
to be moderate.
The foreign visible supply, Continental
stocks omitted. Increased 4,700,000 bushels
for the week to 78,000,000 bushels.

start, duo to yesterday's Government re

cables and lower temperatures In the South
brought In an accumulation of buying
orders before tho opening this morning
and gave tho cotton market a strong tone.
First prices showed galna ranging from
6 to 15 points. Commission, houses took
virtually all months and shorts covered on
a fairly large scale.
Aside from a supply from Liverpool the
selling waa scattered, and only advancing
bids brought cotton into thn market. After
the call the tono continued firm with prices
holding nt the early levels.
December led the early advance with
both that delivery and October making new
high records for the season shortly after
11 -o'clock. This advance carried October
up to 17 nnd December to 17.29. while
January sold at 17,15, with the general list
showing net gains ot 15 to 22 points early
In tho aecond hour.
It looked as though the submarine scare
had subsided, and the strength of near
months served to counteract apprehensions
that' delayed nhlpmenta would be hedged in
the local market, or that cotton previously
destined for export might be delivered on
contract.
The market becamo unsettled late In the
morning. Some ot yesterday's buyers
seemed to be selling on the early advance,
while southern hedge hedgo selling waa a
little more In evidence, and prices worked
oft some 9 or 10 points from tho best.
There was no change In the general
character of the news, but some thought
the tendency upward near month premiums
reflected n slackening of speculative In
terest on the tide and a withdrawal of late
month buyers.
Following a setback to 17.16o for December
under somewhat larger offerings of that
position and local and New Orleans sell
ing of Inter months, tho market rallied
half a dozen points on a resumption of
demand for the winter positions from the
large spot firms.
Exports for tho day were 25,493 bales,
including 12,215 bales to CJrrat Britain and
13,278 balea to other points on tho Con
tlnent. Clearances for the season to date
aggregate 1,102,409 bales compared with
182,875 bales for the corresponding period
laat season. .
