A KOOd-natHrad admiral decided that tha -tnt requirements of tho British navy ahould brlnr X. M. S. Orient to tho latand before tha data died for tha ceremony. Lieutenant Flaydon officiated aa beat man, while the Orlont waa left so scandalously short-handed for many hour that a hottlle veaael at leaat twice her alio mliht have ventured to attack her. Boort afterward Robort realrned hit oonv ' mission. Ita recretted tha necessity, bat the damanda of his new sphere In Ufa ren dered thla irtep Imperative. Mining en gineers, laborer, stores, portable houses, engine and equipment were obtained with all haste and tha whole party aalled on one of Sir Arthur Deans' ahlpa to convoy a email tteamer pdally hired to attend to the want of the miner. At last, ona evening, early In July, the two vessels anchored outald Felmtre Rook, and Mir Jan could be seen running frantically about tha shore, for no ralld reaaon aav that he could not atand still. Tha eahlb brought him good new. The Governor of Hongkong felt that any rea sonable requsst mad by Anstruther ahould bo granted If possible. "When we all come back In the cotd weather," ho explained gleefully, "we wilt not Imitate the Sirdar by running on the reef, should we arrive by night." Irl answered not Her blue eye were Bxed on the fast receding cliffs. "Sweetheart," said her husband, "why are you so sllentt" She turned to htm. The light of the set ting sun Illuminated her face with Its golden radiance. "Because I am so happy," she said. "Oh, Robert dear, so happy and thankful." rOSTSCKITT The latest news of Colonel and Mrs. Anstruther Is contained In a letter written by an elderly maiden lady, resident In the North Riding of Yorkshire, to a friend In London. It Is dated some four years after the events already recorded. When the writer states facts, of course, her veracity la unquestionable, but occasionally ah flounders badly when she depends upon her own judgment Here la the letter: "My dear Helen I have not seen or heard of you during so long a time that I am simply dying to tell you all that la hap pening here.
