"BOASTFUL IGNORANCE "
THEME OF HEALTH TALK
Transmission of Diseaso by Germs Def
initely Proved, Says Doctor Dixon
HAItUISBUHQ, Oct 9. "Boastful Ig
norance" Is the theme of State Health Com
missioner Dixon In his "little talk" on
health and hygiene today. He says:
"The boastfulness of Ignorance la ordi
narily not worthy of comment, but when It
Jeopards the health of other persons It Is
perhaps worth while to take up the
cudgels.
"There Is a class of Individuals who Jeer
at nil warnings regarding matters of hy
giene. Statistics, however, show that these
persons who violate the laws of Nature
often meet an untimely death. Unfor
tunately, some give nn ear to such foolish
boasting and run headlong Into danger.
"The transmission of disease by germs Is
most frequently attacked by the Ignorant.
Those persons who accept without comment
the statement that the world revolves upon
Its axis as a part of the solar system, and
thousands of other things which they are
Incompetent to work out themselves, will
bluster about tho absurdity of germs caus
ing disease. That typhoid fever, diph
theria, yellow fever, tuberculosis, anthrax,
malaria and pneumonia are caused by
germs has been proved as definitely as tho
fact that the world Is round."
By the Thotoplay Editor
N'ot so many years ago the Idea of com
bining comfort and beauty In the decoration
of motion-picture theaters was unknown.
And now It la very generally sought after
by the enterprising manager, and not Infre
quently achieved. Philadelphia has been es
pecially favored In this respect The good
work of making the photoplay houses at
tractive and genuinely artlstlo still goes on.
Aa an Instance, one might cite the Palace
and Victoria, Theaters, both on Market

scheme of the first-mentioned amusement

ing arrangements have been varied and new
chairs have been Installed. At present
every one In the rear of the building haa
an unobstructed view of the screen. New
carpets have been added. In other parts of
the theater Improvements testify to the teal
and Intelligence of the management
The Victoria, commodious and welt fur
nished, also bears testimony to the artlstlo
alms of Its directors. The lighting system Is
particularly well conceived. It's hardly nec
essary to mention the capital music which
Is played.
The freshen!ng-up process has also made
the Begent vastly more pretty than before,
and nearly every Market street playhouse.
Including the Savoy, Princess and Market
Street, Is wearing Its fall attire.
Many Improvements also have freshened
up the airard Avenue Theater since the
house reopened. Lobby, orchestra and bal
cony are witness to the renovation.

Police Court Chronicle
There's always a string to the Joy which
comes to Tom Grogan.
Tom says ha has never been completely
happy, although the police hold allgtly
different views. Rver since he was n boy,
Qrogan says, "there's always been a Utile
sand In his sugar." .
Rut with prosperity In the air and alt
men looking rut though they had full and
plenty, Tom nursed the hope that the gloom
which has been trailing Mm would soon
be gone forever.
The evidence of approaching sunshine was.
emphasized when Orogart found K. rathrr
rotund wallet nt large on the' sidewalk. It
was ot the species in which twenty-dollar
bills nestled and looked as though It might
havo frequently been the rendezvous ot
much financial comfort.
The wallet was given the "go-by" by
a rather wlselooklng cop. He was only a,
few feet away when Tom fell on It with a
death grip. Ha slipped rapidly through a
number ot side streets until pure habit
carried him to a place over which a happy
faced man In a white coat presided with be
coming mien.
Tom told many others prment that he
never drank alone. A line ot thirsts soon
