JEWS PRAY FOR PEACE;
YOMJUPPUR OBSERVED
Religious Ceremonies Began at
Sunset and Will End With
Feasts Tohlght
In the synasonues of Philadelphia and In
thousands of households throughout tho
country n special prayer for peace Is belnir
offered today. Tho peace prayer Is a
special feature of the Tom Klppur cere
monies, which began at sunset last nlh
and Vrlll continue until sunset tonight.
For the twenty-four hours every Jewish
house of worship will be crowded, the men
In prayer shawls and, skull caps, occupying
the" floor, while women throne the Rallerlea.
Before sunset the last meal was eaten
and the homes put In readiness for the day
of fastlnir that precedes the fast of tonight
The synagogues wore prepared to receive
the flood of worshipers.

rounded by their choirs, men and boys
wearing prayer shawls of white silk edged
with black. Throuchout the night the- can
gregatlonn, the cantors and the choirs chant,
ed the psalms of Israel.
Today Is a day of Incessant prayer. In
the afternoon comes the ylskar, the prayer
for the dead, which marks the beginning
of the end of the Day of Atonement. The
nlla Is sung, and then comes the shout
vocal with the hope of ages:
"In the year to come wo shall be In our
Holy Land."
Next comes tho Intoned prayer of marlv,
and the praying; hosts know that the sun Is
setting; and another Day of Atonement la
almost at an end. As tho final Invocation
comes to a close there Is a shufflo of shoe,
less feet, and the congregation, weak from
abstention from food and drink and racked
by Inaction, slowly makes Its way to the
door.
Shoes aro donned, and the ancient cere
mony retreats at once Into tho shadow of
the past as the lights and clamor of tho
city beat In upon the throng. Briskly the
