NEW YOmc, Oct, 7.
frpecukUlvo Wall street was confused today In Its efforts to determine what
MM' direct result of the expected peace overtures will be on tho security market.
At first there was some buying; of stock by those who were among the urgent
setters yesterday, but when this demand was supplied recessions ranging from
fractions to 1 point In the lending Issues and 2 to 3 points In specialties were
aaaUUned, making the market show pronounced weakness as the first hour ended."
When that movement was in progress tha disposition prevailed to regard the
statements made by" the press yesterday as well founded, but later consideration
wn given as to whether peace overtures of themselves really, changed the Euro
pean situation Co any material extent.
There was nothing In the foreign exchange market to Indicate that Interna
MfMl bankers regarded the expected arrival of Ambassador Clcrnrd even with
apeetal Interest. Exchange on Ucrlln was unchanged. Sterling exchango ruled,
M It has dona for weeks, on the basis of 4.78 7-16 for cables and French exchange
was a trifle lower.
There was some liquidation In United States Steel common earlier In tha
Jay, but that stock had opening sales of 5000 shares at lit to 116H. from which
R declined to 116U, and was quickly back to nbovo 116.

Exceptional strength was shown In Southern Hallway, which roso from l!6Vi to
above 29. Marine preferred yielded to 117V4 and In tho next few minutes was up
to 120. Similar advances of ter recessions were noted all through tho list, with
tha market tone strong as the half day ended.

CHICAGO, Oct 7. Swift 4 Co. lias declared an extra dividend of J33.D0 per
share, payable November 25 to stock of record October 16.
CURB IS NOT WORRIED
OVER PEACE RUMORS
Market Generally Strong at End.
Good Demand for Stocks
at Concessions
NEW TOniCOct. 7. The Broad Street
Curb a took the overnight effect of the
bankers' announcement about German peace
overtures calmly. There was no special
pressure In any quarter, but Instead, when
ever stocks were obtainable at concessions,
they were eagerly absorbed, and after the
first new minutes prices generally tended
upward.
The fluctuations In Mldvale Steel were
narrow compared with yesterday", that stock
ranging around 69 most of the forenoon.
Submarine Boat rallied after declining to
(0, A fractional gain was made In United
Motors.
The Charcoal Iron stocks were again In
demand, but these Issues are now In scant
supply and few transactions were made.
Dundee Arizona was also bid for In
large volume because of the signing of the

NEW YORK COFFEE MARKET
NEW TOniC, Oct. 7. The coffee market
opened easy this morning with first prices
showing declines of 2 to 4 points.
Trade Interests again appeared to be
offering quite freely, but there waa a good
demand from outside Interests and the un
dertone after the call was Bteady, with
prices ranging around the opening level.
Trading was moderately active with
transactions on the call amounting to 5250
bags.
The market ruled about steady after the
opening, but there was an apparent desire
on the part of certain Interests here to sell
coffee, and this checked any aggressive
operations which might have occurred on
the buying side.
The attitude of Braill senes to give the
market a rather heavy tone, as shippers
there seem disposed to sell, and while coat
and freight prices give way closely, offers
are quite iiDerai.
