MniKH in some Issues. otTset by sharp declines In others, nnd around midday
he Hsi ejernratljr showed a heavy tone. This situation ehangnd In the Afternoon,
yrhmi vtcerou buyfns; furnished evidence that nearly all tho supply ntcon
Miei had. come from bearish source and had simply resulted In creatine a
new short account at the moderately low levels.

The copper stocks, after showing a weak tone In the first half of the day,
were also active and strong In the afternoon trading. More Importance was
attached, however, to the Increased activity In the late trading, which wan re
L garded as foreshadowing a broader speculative Interest, with evidence' of a deple

NEW TORK, Oct. J. As compared with
yesterday's excited market, trading In cot
tan was rather tame this morning, and there
I was not the buying power In either trad
interest or speculative sources that char'
aeterlied the big upturn on Monday,
'First quotations wsrs t points higher
to 3 points lower, near months having
i better support than late positions, as there
waa some selling .of the latter by the South.
"Brokers who frequently act for spot
Bouhs ware moderate purchasers early,
but pressure continued, and at the end of
the Jtrtt twenty minutes prices were 6 or 7
points under yesterday's final quotations.
Offerings were well taken on the early
reaction, which carried active months about
17 to tl points under yesterday's high rec
ords. Southern beaging seemed much less
Iff evidence than some of yesterday's sellers
tor a reaction had anticipated, while It
was rumored that mills had buying orders
In' the market, and that southern mills had
purchased about 10.000 bales of January
taring the first hour.
Later fluctuations were somewhat lrreg
tar, but the market held steady toward
ssMday st a point or two over last night's
.ateaing figures.
.Tfcere was renewed firmness around raid
4ay. The failure of southern offerings to
keeoroe heavier evidently eneouraged a re
Stewal of bull support, while trade buying
was more la evidence and early aellera
swered oa the advance. Which carried
jaMtlve months some II to 20 points net
t" January eontraets sold up to HrJO or
wruin iv pnnu oi yeweraay-a niffi level.
e reeetpu of cotton at the ports for
Malay were estimated at 70,000 bales, com.
SMwd with W,.ll bIm last weak, 6,H
Mies hut year and 17.IM bales In 114.

CHICAGO, Oct. J Fears of a disaster

Iuropean statlitlclans were thrown Into, a
panic by the news from Argentina because
a large production had been looked for
ward to there to make up for the big de
ficiencies In other exporting countries.
Argentine speculators and grain men
bought fntures here and comtnlaalon bouses
had a good class of purchasing orders.
Active proflMeklng occurred, but final
price were well above yesterday's close.
Sharp advances were reported at Itosarlo

where reflected the loss In Argentina and
advanced sensationally.

CITY OF PARIS LOAN
SELLS HIGH ON CURB
General List Irregular Buying
Orders Arc Plentiful and
Offerings Scant
NEW VOnK, Oct. I. The moil import
apt feature In the Curb trading today was
'he broad demand for the new city of Paris
loan. These bonds, which are offered for
subscription at f8a. payable October 14,
advanced from a quoted price ot 98i yes
terday to 9H bid today, with tales at
9i to 9S.
Although bids were numerous the amount
of business was small, as bankers do not yet
know where they stand In regard to allot
ments, and few of them cared to commit
themseli-es by making sales even at this
apparent profit.
In the general list there was some Ir
regularity of market tone and price move
ments that have been displayed on the
Stock Gxchange for the last few days.
Some of the leading Issues, like JI Id vale
Steel, declined about 1 point in the morn
ing, with a rally In the afternoon. The
market tone, however, waa better than was
Indicated by the trading, as brokers had
many buying orders' on hand at slight
concessions from current quotations, while
offerings were scant and the supply was
easily absorbed.
Poole Engineering advanced from Uttt
to lit, Ijike Torpedo rose from 10 H to 11
and Carbon Steel sold at 88 to 90.
