tka4 become exhausted by the demands made uixin them oil through the month
at September. Generally, the tone wss heavy and a receding tendency was In
v!4b In rmtij- of th favorite speculative Issues, with tho room nRnln disposed
to take an aggressive position on the bear aide and endeavor to reach atop order.
Moat Interest was attached, aa usual, to the trading In United Htnte.a Sleel
common, which, after wiling at 118 at the opening, dropped more than 2 point
twin; the day. Many bt the minor ateel Industrial, after making ndvancen of
t to t point, lost nil thee gain and ended with omo amount of net !om, nnd
eopprr .stocks generally were In supply at concessions from enrly In the day.
Thoro waa a special movement, however, In Norfolk and Western, that stock
moving up more thari S point In tho flrt hour to 140, nnd, although It reacted
rmtHd midday, became atrong ugalrt In the afternoon, Republic Iron nnd Btcel

tn I point under a constant supply from thntVotirce.
Third Avenue was Influenced by uncertainty oyer the dividend position, due
t the strike, and dropped J points, but Interest Identified with the management
insist that the only effect of the strike on the company' dividend policy will be
to defer the Increase In the rate to 5 per cent from January until July.
There was nothing In tho way of now developments on which any of the
selling could have been based, nnd the assumption was general that price ro
eosslofls, with smaller business, simply reflected a temporary bait In the bull
movement.
