Continued strength in stock market, with more new high records. Intercut
switched to railroad shares. Wheat was weak for greater part of day, but
rallied at close. Business in cotton small, urtth prices slightly higher. For

NEW YOIUC, Sept. 27.
There was a general diversion of speculative Interest today from the stocks
which vera prominent for the last three weeks Into new Issues. Tliero was
heavier trading by far In Union raclflc than United States Steel common, nnd
the bis Interests generally reflected a disposition to accumulate those Issues
Instead of tho Industrials.
The leading Interests on Wall street havo closed out most of their long
lines of United States Steel common and paid less nttcntlon to that Btoclc than
at any time since tho market trading broadened to Its present high range.
It has been known for some tlmo that Important banking interests have been
accumulating Union Pacific and the understanding ts general that tho dividend
distribution on that stock will be Increased at tho November meeting.
Dividend prospects had most to do with an advance of moro than 1 point in
Erie first preferred, and a general desire to take tho long sldo of the railroad list
was a factor In causing strength In many of tho securities, Including Erlo com
mon, Atchison, Baltimore mnd Ohio and New York Central.
There was a special movement In Norfolk nnd Western, which mado a gain of
more than 3 points during tho day. Now high records were made in a number
of Issues, Inspiration moving up to G9U and American Beet Sugar moving up
to 99. Heading was also established at a new high record, selling at 115?i.
Tho greatest advance was In General Electric, which rosa C points to 184,
with tho buying based on reports of a coming stock distribution, although oilicers
of the company deny that any such step is Intended.
Anaconda continued to reflect disappointment over the failure to Increase
the dividend yesterday nnd vns in supply at concessions from the opening. A
large part of tho trading In the market leaders was of a professional character

NEW YOIIK, Sept 27. The International Paper Company has declared a
quarterly dividend of 1 per cent on the preferred stock. The last previous dividend
was of 1 per cent. The increased dividend is payable October 16.

LEADS CURB TRADING
Midvale Steel Continues in Good
Demand and Advances.
New Issues Sell
NEW VOniC, Sept. 27. There was the
same show of strength on the Broad Street
Curb during the early trading as was dis
played on the stock exchange, with a num
ber of issues making substantial gains;
but with the large majority of stock traded
in on the open market Ignored in bullish
operations.
Zinc Concentrating was dealt in on a
largo scale, fully 10,000 shares changing
hands in the first hour, with tHt price
moving up to EH. The activity the last few
days has been In response to the apprecia
tion of new developments. Today it was
announced that a contract had been closed
with the Utah Apex Company for the
treatment of its ores and recovering zlno
values.
Two new Issues were traded on the curb,
Texas Company rights, which were traded
In at 2S to 20, and new Wheeling and Lake
Krle stock, when Issued, which sold at 20
to 20,i.
Midvale Steel continued In good demand,
and there was active trading In Ohio CitleB.
Standard Oil stocks continued to make new
high records, with Ohio Oil traded in at
282 to 28S and Standard Oil of New Jer

The market at Liverpool nacRed nt the
close on tho victories of the Allied forces,
after havlnz displayed steadiness. The
temporary improvement was helped by re
ports thnt Argentina had withdrawn nil
offerings from American markets, but later
the rumors were declared to ho without
foundation.
Although the weather In that country
continued clear, ndvlces were received that
It was threatening rnln.

nnd a good milling demand was reported.
The visible supply, however, is large.

ltet on the call this morning was afcmall
affair. Aside from tho closing out of a lone
speculative account there was no feature to
the trading. The early tone was barely
steady, with prices 6 to 9 points lower, or
about in line with Liverpool.
Wall Street Interests were buyers, nnd
purchasing for spot account was noted.
Commission houses operated on both sides.
After the call some large room traders
started bidding the market up.
After selling about 9 to 10 points net
higher after the call, the market turned
steadier on bullish crop reports and cover
erlng on a moderate demand from Wall
street sources. General business was quiet,
but prices worked back to sjlghtly above
last night's closing figures.
