IN NEW YORK STRIKE

NEW YOUK, Sept. JO After a night of
the worst rioting since the beginning of
tho present strike of street car men In New
York. In which subway, elevated and sur
face cars were attacked, orders wcro Issued
today to the .New York police that rioting
must be put down at all costs.
The authorities are convinced that the
striking pien do not Intend to abandon their
fight for recognition without a most des
perato struggle, and arrangements have
been made for a more rigid guard than ever
for protection of the cars.
Twenty arrests were made today In con
nection with the rioting, and of the men
now held fifteen have been charged with
commlss'on of a felony. It Is the first time
since the strike began that any men ar
rested for taking part In violent demon
strations have been booked on this charge.
The apparent failure ot negotiations to
prevent a general Industrial strike If tha
traction dimculty Is not settled by 2 o'clock

Shonts, of the Interborough. to arbitrate
