reau's renort. Showing 8?0,0pJ bales of
cotton g!niiil up to Septembr 1, the hlch
tct en record for the period, caused further
liquidation and heavy short ssllng on the
Cotton &xohana this morning, which forced
prices of the active positions down 1 to 10
points on the call, arid brought about
further pressure so that quotations at the
tnq of ths (lrst fifteen minutes wore 13 in 15
paints nt lower,
. Thtra was some buying by New Orleans
and room operators. Ltvorpool sold the
seir options and purchased the distant
months, Wall ctret also sold.
The selling movement became extremely
active and excited right after the opening.
The heavy glnnmg 'figures were rather a
Ihook to traders who had been operating
n imall crop esttrnatea, and while they
may not have been generally taken as any
thing like a gUWe to ultimate yields, they
reflected immediately available supplies
and the rush to take cotton at prevailing
prices.
fiton orders were uncovered an the de
cline, while there was Wall street, Southern
end Western selling, with October breaking
to 14.(3 and December to 15-90 or ?7 to 31
points net lower and about 1 per bale
under the high records of last Friday.
There was trade buying on a.scalo down,
while covering bceiiue active toward the
middle of the morning and rallies of 10
to l) points occurred shortly after 11
o'clock,
' The market was muoh less active late In
the. morning. After the heavy early liquida
tion, qfferinga for lqng account were small,
nd, prices rallied on a little trade buying
ftd covering,
ncraber contracts sold at 15. 18c. or
Jteilt U points above the early low level,
tut the absence of aggressive buying after
a break of about 140 points from recent
high records suggested some modification of
bullish sentiment.

CURB ISSUES STRONG
AND TRADING ACTIVE
The loeal nnnnrlal it strict tolr was very
muoh surjirlaed at the announcement from
llarrlsbunr lht the Piiblto Service Com
mission had rcfuaeil to approve the agree
ment between tho l'lilladelphla llorlo
Compiny and the Kj stone Telephone Com
pany for the use by tho l'lilladelphla Kleo
trle Comiwny of the condtl ts of the Key
stone company
The fact that there was np ruling 111 the
cose, bs imnounced in the llnrnauunT "
patch imxelrd the ."treet somewhat as to
what the real meaning of this was. Wheth
er the aRTeomcnt between tho two com
pauliw, If presented In a dirferent- form,
would be sanctioned by the commission, ths
fitrt could not gues This, however, was
the Impreralon In some quarters.
Slnco the nurennciit was resohrt be
tween tho campanlcs tho financial district
bad rjenerally Mt that tho commission
would Rive It approl, a the opinion was
that the contract would be benaflclal to
both rompaiileo The aireement was dated
.lAiiuary 1, 1915, and It had been bins be
fore the Public Service Commission fof
about a year. Tho Street thought that the
contract was particularly nlantaseoun to
the Keystone Telephone Company, luas
much aa tha company had tho right of re
call at a.ny time that tha conduits were
ncMdoil to extend tha business.
The contract iiroiilcl that the Keystone
Telephone Company u to receive a mini
mum imtal of f2&,00t) a year for the first
year and an Increase of $13,690 a year
thereafter until the amount reachod HOB,
POI, tha 910M09 a year to he paid durirur
tha remainder of the contract. Stock ot
e ther company was not adwnioly affected
In the trailing on the Htoak Uxohanire; In
fact. Keystone stock sold up a fraction and
"1 X." was unchanged.
.Much uncertainty Is shown In tho estli
mates of the showing to be made by the
United States fitoel Corporation in Its
statement ot unfilled orders as ot August
SI, to be Issued tomorrow. Those who
unualiy have been closest In their forecasts
do not look for any material change from
the total of ,62,R93 tons, reported a month
ago.
Some believe tlmt a small gain wilt be
recorded, while otlters are looking for a
sl'ght decrease. An average of the guosaos
made would Indicate that tho statement will
bo about a stand-off.
New business came In at a good rate In
August and mora orders could ha been
taken had It bean possible to give the
dellverlea requested. It Is, however, be
lieved that what contracts did not ma-
terlnllis during the month because ot this
feature will come to the makers this ronth
or next
Very little activity developed in the tradi
ng on the l'hlladalphla Plook nahsngo 10
day While poms stock spqwed declines
the majority went Into higher territory,
The gains, however, were not large, ex
ceptlng In a few rase.
Whan Cramp Shipbuilding sold up thr.
points some attention was attracted to It,
but la.Hr part of the Haiti was lost. J. O.

pro omenta were recorded In many other Is
