w V-7 A l 14 ODDITIES AND NOVELTIES FOR THE PHONOGRAPH FAN Th Marirtiba and Balalaika on Recent Records Vogue of the Ukulele and Hawaiian Stringed Insruments. ' Some New By the Phonograph Editor This week attention la Rive's to a number f Unusual Instruments nhd combinations. om or other of these tvIII diversify home phonograph prosrama with novelty. Many of them are of musical merit oa'.da from their oddity. A most Interesting combination of Instru ments banjo, naxoplione and piano 'n Van Epa' Trio slvcs two live and. spirited selec tion.1!. "Hill and Dale" U a fox-trot nuaran- lecd to llVAn fhlnff.q tin whuMWP htavArl. The brllllanco of the banjo coupled with the somber tone of the saxophone makes a most Interesting record "Daly's neel" Is on the. same- record. Tlie Florentine Quartet Is a combination f violin, cello, flute and harp. One of tho eldest, but still one of the most popular examples of the music composed for the graceful minuet Is the Bocchcrlnl composi tion. The melody Is exquisite, and It has a captivating, rhythmic swing; moit fascinat ing:. "Traumerel" Is one of a group of smaller compositions, called "Childhood Scenes." It la probably tho most beautiful of the entire croup nnd la a universal favor ite, beloved by old and young. Ten minutes of delightful, novel enter tainment nro offered In tho form of "Medley of Irish Jigs." Tho medley Is played by John J. Klmmel on the accordion, and Is a revelation of the posslblt. ties' stored up In this small Instrument. In tho hands of Mr. Klmmel, the accordion gives the listener tho impression of nn entire string orchestra playing. A genuine Irish Jig, played with true Irish ardor. Is not nn everyday occur renco. If you think you cannot danco an Irish Jig. Just listen to this medley. It will awaken some dormant Impulse of Hibernian fun and you'll simply have to venture! Two well-known and delightful concert pieces the tuneful "Llcbcsfreund Waltz" and a graceful Chamtnade dance nro given by Charles Kellogg, "tho Nature Singer," and the Victor Orchestra, and they seem especially appropriate for the exhibition of Xellogg's charming bird effects. A well-known music lover on hearing tho Hurtado Brothers' marimba orchestra nt the Panama-Pacific Exposition exclaimed, "There la music to sit on a porch and listen to all night 1" And Ideal summer music are these Columbia recordings of marimba waltzes. Indeed, nil the Hurtado marimba music will sound with added sweetness In tho open air. Their octet plays Medley of 'Waltzes (O. Hurtado), and Faded Flowers Waltz (Strauss). HAWAIIAN NOVELTIES It would tako new words to describe the elusive beauty of "Pun, Mohala." This Hawaiian chorus with uUalclo accompani ment Is Intricately harmonious and deeply effective music. Tho Hawaiian medley from the guitars of Helen Louise and Frank Ferera Is one of the most varied and cleverly performed duets by theso popu lar players of Hawaiian melodies. The opening "hula" Is tho "genuine thing." Helen Louisa and Frank Fercra, with their Hawaiian guitars, are popular Ha waiian players, who have given for Septem ber two more attractlvo numbers. Tho "Maul Aloha" is really a syncopated ver sion of the favorite "Aloha Oe," and has 'Volume enough to be used for dancing in rooms not too large. "Pua Carnation" Is a "sliding" effect which has so taken tho fancy-of tho American public. For Victor the Russia Balalaika Orchestra presents two numbers which exhibit well the perfect ensemble and exquisite tone production of these gifted players. The Hurtado Brothers Itoyal Marimba Band offers two fine standard waltzes, the "Blue Danube" nnd the "Southern noses," There has been so much Interest ex pressed In tho method of playing tho Ha waiian guitar that a few words on this subject will be welcome to all admirers of the southern Pacific music The guitar Is nn ordinary American Instrument, but Instead of being .held upright by the left hand the guitar Is laid flat, across the knees. On the fingers of the right hand are slipped metal, thimblelike picks which pluck the strings, while the left hand fin gers the freta by pressing down the strings with a metal bar. Excellent samples of the effects are "Manna Kea Medley," by Helen Louise and Frank Ferera. a Hawalllan gui tar duet, and "That Ukalele Band," (Gran ville), also played by Helen Louise and Frank Ferera, likewise a Hawaiian guitar duet. The Six Brown Brothers Saxophone Quartet gives Victor fans two corking numbers In fox-trot time. The Victor Mili tary Band and Victor Dance Orchestra each present a pair of melodious dance se lections, and Conway's Band plays a Var sovlana. two one-steps and two fox trots that will delight the dance devotee. , Here is a treat that will tickle the musi cal palates of all lovers of the old slave day river songs and bring to the younger generation soma rattling. Jigging melodies that will open their eyes to what real Amer ican ragtime is. How any one who can sing as welt as H. C. Browne found time to play the banjo as well is a mystery. His banjo-accompanied numbers are "Nigger Love a Watermelon" and "Old Tucker." The Athenian Mandolin Quartet gives a charming Hawaiian waltz and also the "Caclix .March" for the Victor, and those popular Hawaiian players, Helen Louise end Frank Ferera, play two fascinating numbers on their guitars, and one of them can be used for dancing. SOME UNUSUAL RECORDS Kevin's "Narcissus," played by the Gypsy Countess Verona on the czlmbalom. Is the most unique of Columbia's late rec ords. The genuine gypsy czlmbalom is a rare instrument In this country In fact, there, are only one or two places In Amer ica where It may be heard. The whimsical notes of "Narcissus" are peculiarly suited to the romantlo. rich and resonant notes yoked by the Countess from the czlm balom. In construction the czlmbalom re sembles the Interior of a grand piano the -wire strings which are open before the player being struck by felted and weighted mallets. "Zlgeunerwelsen." a czlmbalom solo by the Countess, la one of the Columbia's late recordings. The "Zlgeunerwelsen" is as romantic and temperamental as the gypsies themselves a musical labyrinth of elfin cprightllness, shadowed pools and laughing "Zlgeunerwelsen" Is a selection the con waterfalls, with a skylarking climax. Bolaseur of rare records will treasure. ' On the flute, for Edison. Moor offers Tpntbonne's serenade, "Chasse aux Papll r"Iona," This. Is a. brilliant "Butterfly Chase," as its name indicates. Several dainty themes are heard, all graceful, light and airy aa the flitting butterflies they repre sent. Weyert A. Moor is accounted one of the best flute players In the country. He wm born In pelft. Holland, and studied music n the Hague Royal Conservatorlum, Ha his been first flutist with several organi sations abroad and In the United States. The famous "Berceuse," from Oodard'a "Jeeelyn." Is given for the same company by Brnst Albert Couturier, the cornetlst. Th cornet version of the lullaby displays the melody to even better advantage than la the original vocal form It occupied in AUTUMN BESOBTS ATLANTIC CITY. N.
