CHICAGO, Aug, 20. Advances of 2 to
n'.ic were established In tho wheat market
today nnd tho tono was steady to firm dur
ing nearly tho cntlro session, with tho ex
ception of Just at and after tho opening,
when there was some further liquidation
of holdings.
Indications were numerous thnt tho
Inrger lines of the staplo wero not un
loaded during tho break on Monday, but
were rather added to at least to a moderato
extent. Tho Initial levels wero tho lowest
of tho day nnd brought In some good buy
ing. Tho supply was not large nt any time
nnd nil operators appeared more cautious.
Broomhall, tho Liverpool authority, In dis
cussing the grain possibilities brought
about by tho cntrnnco of Rumania In the
European conflict and Ha effect on tho
opening ot tho Dardanelles, was quoted as
saying:
"Wheat In South Russia Is soiling at
50c per bushel, nnd the Dardanelles will
be opened up perhaps sooner than re
cently expected. Stocks nt Odessa aro
very moderate and railway facilities In
adequato owing to the usage for military
operations In that section. World's ton
nage Is lighter, with difficulty attending
shipment, and therefore It would require
much tlmo for shipments to be felt even
were tho straits opened nnd the entire
surplus available.
"In tho event of reopening, prices would
naturally advance toward an export parity."
Tho avallablo supply In the United States,
according to Bradstreets, Is 62,903,000
bushels, an Increase of 1,721,000 bushels
from last week, nnd compares w.th 11,147,
000 bushels last year; In Canada It Is 24,
081,000 bushels, a decreasa of 3,880,000
bushels, and compares with 3,132,000 bush
els a year ago; In Kurope (continental
stocks omitted) It Is 73,200,000 bushels, a
decrease of 8.300,000 bushels compared with
last week and 40,100,000 bushels last year.
The total American and European supply is
100,277,000 bushels, n decrease of 10,459,000
bushels contrasted with last week and 51,
379.000 bushels a year ago.
Firmness was shown In corn, which ad
vanced to Ittc In- sympathy with the
better feeling in wheat. There was fairly
good buying throughout the session. A
report by John Inglls saying corn In South
and Central Kansas was virtually a failure,
with western Missouri not much better, was
a bullish factor In midsesslon.

NI.AV TOnK, Aue. 20. Tho sensation
ally strong Liverpool cablc3 were not fully
responded to hy tho cotton market this
morning, which opened 12 to 21 points
higher, with exception of September, which
was 35 points higher. To have reflected
the Liverpool ndvnnce, first prices should
havo been up over GO points.
This Indlffcrcnco and the comparatively
lightness of trade were due to further
profit-taking and scattered rains In the
Southwest, coupled with the knowledge that
Liverpool's strength was largely an ad
justment of values to a proper point over
American prices. .... ,
Private cables attributed the Liverpool
upturn to light southern offerings nnd an
effort to discount a bullish bureau report.
At tlio end of tho first 20 minutes tho
market here was fairly activo and about
12 to 10 points above last night's close on
activo positions.
The decline from tho opening figures car
ried active months about 1 to 6 points net
lower, but prices btcadlcd around 115.58 for
rieremher. Offerings wero not ns urgent
as they wero yesterday, while private crop
reports wero In line with the cxccptatlons
of a severe falllng-oft In condition, nnd to
ward the middle of the morning there were
rallies of 10 to 12 points on covering and a
renewal of bull support, inis oume en
countered increased offerings, and prices
worked back to nbout the low point.
The receipts of cotton at the ports for
tho day were estlmnted at 2C.000 bales,
compared with 18,052 bales laBt week,
ii g-.7 ,nie lust vear and 6325 bales In
1914.
A.' Norden it Co. make the condition of

The Watklns Ilureau of II. P. Bachman

August 23 61.7 per cent, against 76.4 per
