Philadelphia Organization Hits
Out at Interference df Many
Kinds With Photoplay
Business
i
I By the Photoplay Editor
Several days affo there nrpearetl In this
department tin article by Oliver Morosco,
In -which he declared that the moving pic
ture was alrendy showing signs of degen
eration, that Its doom was seated. At the
tfme no detailed answer -was made, The
Photoplay Editor contented , himself with
pointing out that whlto Mr. Morosco's
Analysts of the situation was correct In hts
remarks on the great number of bad movies
produced, his conclusion was wrong. The
next step will be a gradual bettering of
the films.
Today wo give space to a plaint of an
other nature. It Is from tho exhibitors:
the people who choose tho films made by
others, who give their theaters to these
Alms, who take the chances with large In
vestment. Many persons will disagree with
come of their points. Tho question of
quarantine Is a vexed one, and no one
seema to bo able to solve It to the satis
faction of all. The Motion Picture In
hibitors of Philadelphia met recently at
the ofTIco of tho Photoptayer Company,
"Parkway building, to discuss the matters
mentioned below. The following Is from the
letter calling the meeting:
"The motion picture exhibitor of today
la waging a losing battlo against a host
of enemies worse than nny business ever
before lias had to contend with. An unjust
censorship, a discriminating quarantine the
low price of admission, the increased cost
of films; theso and many other conditions
aro sapping tho very life blood from tho
theater business. These aro conditions we
must already contend with, but Is that the
end to tho persecution of our buslness7 Wo
don't know. What Is to prevent all those
persons, official and otherwise, who are try
ing to regulate our business for us tho
business In which wo have hundreds of
thousands of dollars Invested from fur
ther Imposing unjust restrictions upon our
theaters, tho necessity for which oxlsts
only In tho minds of the 'regulators'? In
dividual protests aro futile. Only In con
certed action may a remedy bo found."
' Henry Ford purposes nominating Thomas
ZL Ince as a candidate for tho Nobel Prize,
In view of the fact that Mr. Inco produced
that greatest of all screen spectacles, "Civ
ilization," .now current at the Criterion The
ater. At least so It 13 said. Mr. Ince's mas
terpiece has admittedly created an epoch
In the art of silent drama production, and
by reason of that fact has Interested many
noted advocates of universal peace. It will
be recalled that Mr. Ford paid $1000 a seat
for a private showing of "Civilization" In
Detroit August 4.
H II. Sothcrn and Edith Storey aro busily
engaged on "An Enemy of the King," by
Kobert N. Stephens. Frank Thomson Is di
recting. Humors are flying fast. Don't be sur
prised If Griffith and Inco films land on tho
open market soon. A tip frpm Wld.
"W. Christy Cabanuc, for seven years as
sociated with D. "VV. Griffith as director. ha3
signed a long-term contract with tho Metro
Pictures Corporation. Ills first work on
the Metro program will be the direction of
Francis X. Bushman and Beverly Bayno
In a new serial, as yet unnamed. Tho serial
will be released through Metro In 14 epi
sodes of two rcel3 each. Ho will start work
With Metro early in September.
Police Court Chronicles
Dan Gallon's dog Is happy only when he's
In trouble.
He likes excitement and growls constantly
when things are quiet. But Gallon himself
says the dog Is misunderstood. Ho contends
that most of tho accusations mndc against
Pete, as the animal Is called, are unwar
ranted. But the facts do not r.greo with Dan's
claims. Pete's latest experience goes to show
that It makes him mlserablo to see other
dogs happy. Although he had "put away"
a fairly good dinner. It annoyed him to see
another dog feasting on a bone near Forty
first and Market.
Pete attacked tho brother canine, pulled
the bone from him and chased him down
the street. The owner of the other dog com
plained to Pete's master.
Instead of expressing sorrow, Dan peeled
eft his coat and wanted to fight But as Dan
was skipping about with fists ready for ac
tion a cop appeared.
Dan Immediately grabbed his dog and
held him tight.
"Which is you and which Is the dog?"
asked the cop.
At this Dan replied " "
Which caused his Immediate arrest
Dan tried to explain to Magistrate Harris
that his dog was unjustly accused, but the
Judge did not agree with him. The owner of
the dog which lost the bone said he would
be satisfied If Dan got his dog another din
ner. Dan agreed to this. He was discharged
with the understanding that he would spend
many days In Jail If he didn't bring about
a speedy reform In the character of Pete.

PHYSICIAN FACING
DEATH WITH SMILE
St. Louis Doctor, for Whom
Specialists Have Abandoned
Hope, Laughs at Fate
ATLANTIC CITY, Aug. 28. Literally
condemned to death with a cancerous
growth In his stomach which is steadily
sapping Ills vltnllty despite all that medl'
cnl science has been ablo to do for .him,
Dr. Harry J. Cummlngs, one of the most
prominent physicians of St. Louis, laughed
In tho face of fate here today, He has
been doing that every day since ho camo
here early in the summer and took a cot
tage In Chelsea In tho hope that a change
of sccno and n new atmosphere might help
to prolong his days.
On tho porch of his residence, nt 2626
Pacific avenue, yesterday the St. Louis
doctor, n stocky figure of Slightly nbove
medium height, grny of hair and blue of
eye, to nil Indications a man In perfect
health, read a dispatch from St. Louis. It
stated that he had cqmo hero to faco a
living death under tlio happiest circum
stances possible for a condemned man.
But when ha lmd concluded tho grim
story Doctor Cummlngs laughed, a full
wholesome laugh. It was not the fact thnt
fate had condemned him to face virtually
a. living death which evoked his humor,
but tho supplementary statement that to
him had fallen the largest fee ever paid
a practitioner In St. Louis medical pro
fession. Doctor Cummlngs was a close
friend of Alines Campbell, head of tho
North American Company, who died some
months ngo In Norwich. Conn. Tho St.
Louis dispatch said Doctor Cummlngs had
been paid $-10,000 for his services ren
dered the millionaire
"Mr. Campbell was a friend of mine. We
had business relations, Tho $40,000 paid
mo was In satisfaction of certnln claims I
had. It wa-J not a professional fee," ho
said smilingly. Then he added quickly, "I
wish It had been."
Doctor Cummlngs Is no sentimentalist.
"I am still on my feet." ho said. "It Is a
fact that I have 'trouble' In my stomach,
a tumor the specialists tell wo. While
there is llfo there always Is hope. Medical
sclenco is accomplishing amazing things In
theso days. No man should give up hope,
because life Is too rich a heritage to be
treated lightly. Worry has killed many
men."
Ho found no fault with the statement that
ho Is awnltlng certain death at his shore
home. Ho confirmed the part which said
ho was facing fate bravely by smiling
whilo ho Bpoko and declaring that seashore
life has many compensations.
