Chicago, nnd Jnmei M. Bnrnes, of Phila

lUo men won all tho prizes, as Simpson,
with a wonderful CC In tho third round this
lorenoon, took tho speclat prize for best
scoro durlnflf tho tournamont and estab
llnhed a record for tlio 5910-yard course.
Hi was pressed hard for this honor by H.
C Lagerblade, of Youngstown, O., who reg
istered G7 on the last round.
Tho course wan hard nnd fast as a result
of Scorching weather, which caused sev
eral contestants to withdraw after the
morning round. Simpson found the going
to his lilting nnd nvolded tho numerous
natural hazards of the course, his CO In
cluding six "blrda" and 12 par holes.
At the finish of his last round ho had n

for p. total of 2S0, but was bomewhat dis
concerted by borne spoofing by Jack Hutch

was runner-up to Kvans In the national

round, and was tied with Oeorgo Sargent,
former national champion, for the lead with
287. Then Simpson came In with a large
gallery nnd barely failed of the name fig

on tho field to find that Hagen had two
par fours for tho title, all the other con
testants having fallen by the wayside.
Hagen stepped to the seventeenth tee
knowing that ho had to make two fount to
win. Ho coolly drove 275 yards straight
down the hilly fairway and pitched to tho
far sldo of tho blind green. HI? 30-foot putt
was dead and ho made the required scoro.
On the eighteenth tee Hagen took his
cleek and drove 200 yards straight for the
pin over the tricky swales and uphill,
stopping 30 yards short of the pin. His
approach was 20 feet short, but his third
shot wa3 within 18 Inches of the hole, and
he made the second necessary four for the

RIXEY MISSING;
MAYER TO FACE
REDS IN FINAL
Southpaw Fails to join
Team After Visit at
Home
TONEY IS MATTY'S PICK
By CHANDLER D. RICHTER
CINCINNATI, Aug. 19. Eppa Itlxey, the
only southpaw pltcher'on Pat Moran's staff
nnd also tho most dependable, hurler ot tho
Jvatlonal Long-uo champions aside from
Alexander tho Great, In among the missing.
Unless ho turns up ln Cincinnati before
game time today, tho Phillies: will depend.
Upon Ersktno Mayer to trim the Iteds this"
V. in.
Itlxey was given permission to go to hln
homo In Virginia after beating tha 'Giants'
early in tho week, but was ordered to rc
port In Cincinnati yesterday. The gltnt
southpaw promised to do so, but has failed
to put In nn appearance, and has not riotU
fled Moran the catiie of his absence. There
fore, the Phllly pilot Is very much peve4
this morning, nnd unless Itlxey can mako
a satisfactory explanation ho Is likely to b
tnc nrst player lined by Moran.
No Fines
In two years Moran has not been called,
upon to fine n player for breaking the
club's rules, but Illxey la likely to be
punished unless his explanation Is satis
factory. It wns Mornn's Intention to sepd.
Illxey to tho mound today and bring him
bnck for the second game of the double
header against tho Pirates on Tuesday, but
thin plan probably will be changed, as Pftt
docs not feel that he should permit Illxey
to face tho Iteds, considering the fact
that ho has not had a ball In Ills hand for
five dnys.
Lack of control handicapped Illxey for
two years, and It was not until the present
season was well under way that ho suc
ceeded In getting command. Plenty of work,
both ln nctunl combat and In tho morning
practice, wns responsible for Illxey getting
control, and recently he has shown better
command of tho ball thaii nnj left-hander
ln cither league. Tho lack of work Is cer
tain to affect his control, and It may be a
fow days beforo no is iiack ln form.
The splendid showing mado by Mnyer In
his gamo against the Cilnnts nnd a continu
ation of his 1916 brand of hurling In prac
tice has caUsod Moran to give the side-arm
artist his old position na Alexander's run
ning mate, and -ho will be picked to face
Fred Tonoy this afternoon unless Blxcy
reports ln good Bliapo. '
Phils Fear Toncy
Tonoy Is feared by the Phillies, who have
not been able to do much with tho Ken
tuckln.11, nnd Moran will bo much relieved
when the final game of tho year ln this city
has been played, and won. by tha cham
pions. It la said here that Toney Is troubled
with a lamo shoulder nnd that he will not
be able to face the Phils, but Manager
Matltcwson said this morning that his star
would be on the mound.
Eight of the ten games played ngalnat
tho Beds. In this city have been won by tho
PhllB, nnd mombers of the local team de
clared after yesterday's game that they ex
pected Moran'a mon to win the pennant,
basing their belief on the wonderful con
dition of Alexander and tho fact that th
champions are playing consistent ball with
out being under a strain.
Shortstop Hobbs, of the Dayton team of
the Central League, reported to Manager
Mathewson today, but Matty said that lie
had not decided whether ho would send him
Into tho game right .wny.
Only 80 Balls
Alexander pitched only 80 balls In tho
nine Innings yesterday, which Is the same
number he hurled ln blanking the Giants
early In tho week. The total was divided
as follows: 13 in the first Inning, Gln the
second: 5 ln the third, 12 In the fourth, S
In tho fifth, 7 in the sixth, 11 In the seventh,
13 In tho eighth and G In the ninth Inning.
Games of this sort aro not likely to wear
Alexunder out nnd he eurely looks batter
than at any time ln his career. Matty said
after tho game that he never saw a hurler
In such good shape nfter Jolng as much
work as Alexander haB this season.
Fifty fans from Huntington, W, Va., cama
up to Cincinnati to see Alexander pitch.
They went away satisfied. Throughout the
gamo they cheered tho Nebraskan nnd last,
evening each was Introduced to him. When
tho team reaches Chicago, 20 fans from
St. Paul, Nob. (Alex's home city), will see
the game pitched by their fellow-townsman.
Manager Moran having promised to wire Uu
exact day Alexander will pitch.
Is it any wonder they -an't get a winner
In Cincinnati? A. large percentage of the
fans here have already voted Matty a fail
ure because tha Iteds have been playing
poorer ball recently than they did under
Herzog, It also Is evident that Hal Chase la
no longer 'a popular Idol while two or three
other players appear to have rotten "ln
decidedly wrong" with the bleacherltes.
Baseball seems to, be a dead, issue here and
probably will be until the Iteds have a team
in the pennant race.' The attendance yes
terday was about 1000,
Phils Like Klem
The Phllly players were-glad to have Dili
Klem umpiring behind tha plate yesterday.
They contend that Klem ii the only umpire,
ln the National League who can follow
Alexander's curve ball properly and they
are happy when he Is behind the plate.
The Cincinnati outfielders play so deep
for Cravath in the Immense Itedland field
that the slow-footed Callfornlan got A
double on a line single over second. Kouab
was playing1 so deep that It would be abso
lutely impossible for one to hit the ball
aver h's head, Cravath hit three balls hard
yesterday, giving indications of a return
to form.
How Bob Fisher manages to hold a major
league infield position with his throwing arm
in such poor' condition Is a mystery to the
fans here. Tha scribes are panning Man
ager Matty for allowing him to toss games
away with young- linmer on the bench.
Hobbs, the star shortstop of the Day$oa
team, of the Central League, is 'due to re
port to tha Iteds today, and Matty says he
will be the regular Bhartatop In the future,
Cueto, tha Cuban outfielder of Portmouth,
Va, also Is op his way to join the Iteds.
