IN THE PICTURES
A Question for Picture Theater
Managers Which Can Only
Be Answered by the Fans
-he result of tlin Kvenlng Ledger's
Tlmtoplajr Content I now known. The
nnnnlmons decision of the Judges will be
published In tomorrow' Erenlnr. Ledger.
When the feholoplfiy editor stepped out of
doors for a day1 oil he told his assistant
that hA tibn nnslatnnli would And "a. lend."
thnt is something to start Iho department
with, In tho news. But, as the country
papers often say, news nro scarce this
week. The chief Iterri, In fact, has been tho
-visit to Philadelphia of a Griffith star. Ot
that more later. But there have been some
Interesting- things In the theaters them
selves, and those things Are -worth thinking
about
What does the moving-picture fan think
about comedies? Every theater ndvertlses
its feature film five reels, mentions the
names of the star, "ftf tho producer, of the
director Many of them merely ndd "com
edy," as If the comedy vcro n filler. Is It?
Tho fact Is that a great number of per
fectly good fans go to the pictures because
they like the comedies and nro willing to
take a chance on liking the feature The
moving-picture enthusiast has definite likes
and dislikes. Thero nro "Metro-fans" who
do not care for Triangles nnd "Fox-fans"
who will not go round tho corner to sea a
Metro. There aro Drew-comedy enthu
siasts nnd Koystono-liostcrn and others.
They llko their particular brand of comedy
and would go miles to seo it. Of courso,
the Chaplin crowd is enormous, almost uni
versal. Now the point Is that the comedy Is
underplayed as an attraction. Tho writer
knows perhaps a hundred fans who travel
irom one end of tho city to another to seo
a iKeyntono, but they aro often compelled
to phone tho Triangle office to discover
whero a Keystone Is on. Many theaters
havo substituted n serial for the comedy,
and, while the serial has drawn a certain
patronage, tho comedy patronago has fallen
off.
Tako a special case. Hank Mann, In "His
Bread and Butter," was certainly one of
the greatest comody films ever put on. For
about two weeks It was seen horo and
thero and received complimentary mention.
If it is still being shown, and It ought to
run n year, no one can find out unless ho
happens to pass tho theater and Bees the
sign.
Another annoying thing Is that at both
central and neighborhood houses tho ticket
sellers aro utterly unconscious of tho pres
ence 'of comedies. You ask, Is Max Fig
man on today? They toll you no. Perhaps
you go in. Presently Max appears.
A Kttlo playing up of the comedy feature
would be good business, for the exhibitors
and would please, tho fans mightily.
The first showing of David W. Griffith's
"Intolerance" has been unfortunately held
over until Scptomber 5. Tho dato for Phila
delphia Is not yet announced. Mr. Griffith
arrives In tho East soon. ,
