With tho Chnplln-mndnesa banished from
tho center of tho city, sevcrat koou" comics
nro on view downtown, and they add to n
varloty of cood featuro hills. Tho cool
npell has made up In part for tho restric
tions now placed on tho plcturc-audlencoa.
Tho bills aro good enough to tempt any
one.
Tho best war play offered nlnco the
"Birth" and tho only one dealing with the
present conflict which Is at all worthy, Is
"Shell 43" nt tho Arcadia. Mr. "C. Gardner
Sullivan, a writer for Thomas II. Ince, has
"written a glorious script and from It Mr.
Thomas II. Inco's directors havo evolved a
thrilling, almost magnificent film. IL B.
Warner Is tho spy, one of the best por
trayals of tho screen this yenr. Mr.
"Warner has been Bhclvcd for Douglas Fair
banks, whom ho surpasses In every respect
except humor. Ho Is capable. Intelligent, a
real screon actor. And tho putting on of the
work, the spinning of plot and counter-plot,
tho mystery, aro all superbly handled. Half
way through tho film ono Is still In doubt
as to the spy's truo allegiance. Tho end
Is' a splendid climax. Margaret Thomp
son had tho principal supporting role,
although Mr. Thomas II. Ince, tho producer,
put Miss Enid Marlcey's namo first Miss
Markey was In tho 'film. Except for that,
"Shell 43" Is a masterpiece In a small way,
and It Is tho one film of tho week which
must not bo missed. "Gloria's Romance"
takes up time and a good news pictorial Is
,.hown between exhibits of the featuro.
At tho Stanley thero Is a Keystone
comedy ot the first rank, or very near It,
with Ambrose. Mack Swain as the hero.
The feature Is Paulino Frederick In "The
"Woman In tho Case," mado f?om Clydo
Fitch's play. Tho screening Is often expert,
but many things are played up too much,
notably the scene of the forced confession
In which Marie Chambers is excellent, but
revolting. The story moves rapidly nnd. In
spite of occasional awkwardnesses, credibly.
Miss Frederick Is at last released from her
siren spell and plays a straight part wonder
fully -well. At moments she looked more
beautiful than ever, nnd throughout she
acted easily and effectively. Thero Is plenty
of excitement, so those who do not like good
acting may go anyhow for the dramatic
enthusiasm In the play. There Is a scenic
and a news pictorial to bank the two out
standing numbers, tho Keystone and the
Fronman feature.
A Keystone as good as the one mentioned
bove la "Tho Surf Girl." at tho Victoria.
It Btands with a Thomas II. Ince produc
tion, superintended by Thomas II. Ince,
and, presumably, offered by Thomas II.
Ince. The name of Thomas II. Inco should
presently become familiar to tho screen
-world. Thomas II. Inco Is not. as might bo
assumed from the advertising ho gives him
self, tho greatest producer for the movlng
plcture, nor does he act In "Tho Payment."
Bessie Barriscale doe3, and acts very well.
C. Gardner Sullivan, a writer for Thomas
II. Ince, wrote the scenario, and it Is a very
bad one. There are certain fine moments In
"The Payment." It Is worth seeing, and tho
Victoria's bill Is good throughout. The
ecenla Is almost a thriller as near to one
as a scerdp'.can be, and the news pictorial
la excellerillytchosea.
The Palace Is showing Mae Murray and
Theodore Iloberts, In "The Dream Girl," a
feature film reviewed and enthusiastically
praised In this department when it was first
shown. It Is an unusually beautiful film. A
well-rounded selection of other films Alls the

SOPHIE TUCKER HEADS
GOOD BILL AT KEITH'S
Playlet, "Rocking the Boat,"
La Mont's Cowboys Also
Make Decided Hit
Sophie Tucker, tlia "Mary Garden of Rag
time"; Eva Taylor and Lawrence Grattan In
n farce, "ltocklng tho Boat," nnd Bert Ln
Mont and his singing cowboys shared almost
equally last night In what undoubtedly Is
quo of tho best bills that has been seen at
Keith's In many weeks.
It was a rattling good show from start
to finish. Sophie Tucker gavo the headline
act and scored from the first with ease,
grace nnd n fow other things. For tho first
tlmo she appeared "unnlonc" nnd was ac
companied by her own orchestra, known as
tho "Five Kings of Syncopation." How
could she fall to win with flvo kings, ono
might nsk? ,
Bert La Mont nnd his cowboys In a
"round-up of mirth nnd melody," gavo a
performance of unusual merit Tho only
criticism that can bo mado of tho net Is
that It Is too short It is not so In reality,
but the hit tho "boys" made can ho ex
plained better perhnps In tho words of a
stunning girl In tho nudlcnco, who was
heard to remark: "I enjoyed every mlmito
of It nnd could listen to those boys sing all
night."
Tho singing of tho cowboys was of the
topnotch variety In moro ways than one.
Oscar Sacnger's performance as contra
tenor was remarkable. Tho wholo number
Is unusual, snappy nnd full of "pep."
"ltocklng tho Boat" with tho sccno on
tho steamer Honeymoon, offered nnother
opportunity for Eva Taylor nnd Lawronco
Grattan to delight lovers of vaudeville. Tho
playlet proved delightful; it Is from Mr.
Grnttan's own pen.
Franker Wood and nunco W'yda wero
moro than "All night" In a pleasing sketch,
which sparkled with witticisms, good Jokes
and dancing. The Misses Myrtlo Young nnd
Jessica Brown gavo n graceful exhibition of
dancing. They nro good lookers, too.
"aer numbers Included tho Larncds, cy
clists; Clarenco Marks, from "Mado In
l'hllly" ; Mullen nnd llogcrs, who wero ex
ceptionally good ; Jean Berzac's "Petit In
door Circus." Tho pictures, as usual, wero
good.
Tho weather, the house, oven tho dresses
wero cool, but tho npplauso decidedly was
not. F. K. G. F.
Colonial Belles Cross Keys
Dorothy Sherman and her Colonial
Belles scored a decided hit In tho musical
offering which Is tho top-lino attraction nt
tho Cross Keys Theater thl3 week. Tho
chorus Is pretty and tho comedians aro
good.
Other numbers Include Elliott and Mullen,
St Clair nnd Gasper, David S. Hall nnd
company, Abbott and White nnd the Brain
Inos, tho musical clowns. D. J. Padden's
"Phun Phlcnds" will bo tho hcndllno feat
uro for tho latter part of tho week.
Mayor and Manicure Globe
Mattlo Choate and her company scored In
tho one-net sketch "Tho Mayor and the
Manicure," which Is offered as tho head
line attraction at tho Globo Theater this
week. Tho pleco keeps ono guessing nnd
Is entcrtnlnlng to say the least.
Other numbers Include "Tho Girls From
Kokomo," Cutler, Hughes and Cutler, Earle
and Bartlottc, Jack Iteddy, Mabel Johnson,
Kcno and Wagner and several variety per
formers. "End of the Trail" Nixon Grand
There's safety In numbers. Thero aro
two headllners nt Nixon's Grand this week.
They are Maude Ityan, formerly of tho team
of Innes nnd Ityan, and a new Fox film,
"The I3nd of tho Trail." featuring William
Farnum. Miss Ityan's "single" was well,
received.
Other numbers Include Harold Sclman nnd
company In "Tho Bank Messenger," Cotter
and Boulden, Dave Vanfleld and Marjorlo
Daw, and Gregory and Gustav.
