flRfflUT TO REOPEN
" Wmi FEATURfe FILMS
iW. M. PaCch, Exhibitor of "Ne'er
Do Well," Said to Have
Opera House
By the Photoplay Editor
About every Jrear tha Chestnut Street
Opera House reopens. And It Is going to do
K flRsHn.
This time n. new management Is promised
hleh ought to keep It open. For word
fcomes vis Pittsburgh that William Moore
JPatch, who made such a success of the Pitt
Theatre In that city as n homo of special
film productions nt hlsh prices, and who In
troduced a new typo of elaborate; scenic
and Vocal accompaniment In connection
With the showing of 'The Ne'er Do Well"
t tho Forrest, has leased the Chestnut
' Street Opera House for the coming season.
When Mr. Patch was In Philadelphia
during the run tof tho Sellg photoplay, he
taade no secret of his Intention of securing
a house here In which to exploit his own
particular Ideas of photoplay exhibition.
.At tho time Mr. Patch announced that ho
controlled tho Pennsylvania rights to
"Itamona," tho big Clune production : "Kis
met." a 10 or 12 reel film with Otis Skinner.
"William Gillette In "Sherlock Holmes." and
Sir Herbert Tree In "Macbeth." With theeo
and his scenic and orchestral decorations.
Mr. Patch stands a very good chance of
'"putting over" tho Chestnut Street Opera
Jlouso os a successful photoplay theatre.
Following a rather mysterious suit of
"the McClure Interests" against the Para
mount Pictures Corporation to enforce a
$12,000,000 option on the company's capital
tock comes -tho announcement that "the
SlcCluro pictures are now being produced
tinder the McCluro trademark. Ann Mrr
dock Is doing tho first picture nnd Hol
brook Bllnn the second. Five other stars.
Including ono of tho very biggest box ofllce
attractions In the picture business, are al
ready under contract. The first feature will
d released in the early fall, but no one
picture will bo shown until at least six
have been completed and the nucleus of a
high class service to exhibitors absolutely
guaranteed.
"We aro making these expensive produc
tions ourselves with directors and stars con
trolled by us. Instead of in co-operation
rlth other manufacturers, as has been our
custom, to make absolutely sure that the
quality of the pictures will bo up to tho
ilcCluro standard.
"Our plan Is to assemble Into one grntt;,
tho stars of all the programs, and then
to give each picture released the fe.ime vast
national publicity hitherto accorded only
to the IB-part serials.
It Is Interesting to recall that Hearst
' launched his own film comnanv. the, in
ternational, with the avowed purpose of
Utilizing; tha publicity possibilities of his
many papers and magazines to boost Its
Alms. When will tho Atlantic Monthly
'succumb to tho lure of the movies"?

CAMP STEWART, Tex., Atiff. 14. Di

approximation had been made of the num
ber of college students who will ba af
fected by the War Department order per
mitting their discharge. They must go
before September 1( however. If they are
. ta take advantage of this way out of the
eervlce, and staff officers believe tha fig.
urts will ba available within 24 hours. Mi
litiamen who ara not college students In
dignantly protest the order In the belief
that It Is discriminating and dividing tha
division Into classes.
Demobilization of the militia in a way
that will not focus responsibility on Wash
ington, soma militiamen are convinced u
the ultimata object of tho Administration.
They couple the new order with the order
