on the Stoclt Exchange was quiet today,
but the markets although listless, wero
steady In tho main.
Tho gilt-edged section wns dull, with hesi
tation in evidence. Announcement was
mado of the underwriting of a 2,500,000
6U per cent new South Wales loan at par.
Tho revenue, of the United Kingdom for
the week wan fS, 630,000 and the expendi
ture 37,837.000. Thu amount of treasury
bills outbtnndlng was increased 14,179,000.
Sales of exchequer bondi, etc.. wera 11.
973,000. Tho Sank of England advanced
8,000,000 to the treasury.
Americans were Idlo and nominal, but
the undertone was firm, Canadian rails
were cheerful, nnd homo lines steady. Sup
port was furnished to Mexicans. Irregular
ity prevailed In Argentine rnilc on earnings.
Allied bonds Mere maintained. Some min
ing descriptions were goq'J.
The committee raised toe fixed minimum
commission on low-priced foreign bonds
from H to U per cent.

Thero was a lack of offerings from the
start, whllo buying orders came In from
many quarters, and tho supply, at around
recently provnlllng prices, was quickly ex
hausted. llatns ranging from 1 to C points wcro
noted during tho forenoon and additional
advances wcro noted when tho brisk up
turn camo In the railroad stocks In the
afternoon on tho Stock Exchange. The
motor Issues were nmong tho most active
features, with Chevrolet moving up 5 points
to 200, but most Importancu was attached
to tho trading In Strombcrg Carburetor,
which rose to 43, with buying coming to
great extent from disappointed blddcrB for
syndlcnto participation.
Stutz and United Motors wero also actlvo
nnd strong. Similar strength was shown In
many ot tho v.'ar contract stacks. Including
Aetna Explosives, IInllNSignnI and Katho
illon Uronzo preferred. There was n speclnl

mon, based on tho expectation thnt that

BOSTON, Aug. 9. Chief Justice Rugg,
of the Supreme Court, today allowed the
petition of the Western Union Telegraph
Company for writ of error to Supreme
Court of United States In so-called "Ticker"
case. The constitutionality of statute un
der which the 1'ubllo Service Commission
directed the company to furnlih the ticker
service from the New York Stock Exchange
to Calvin Foster, broker, Is involved.

sibility of n change In the management,
but these rumors were not In any way con'

was firm, but thero was little activity hi

excess of, 2500 shares.
