NEW YORK. Aug. 1. Buying of a good
character caused a steady tone on the cot
ton exchange this morning, although prices
at the start showed declines of 5 to 8 points
In the active Issues, with August down 11
points. This range was about 3 points
better than due on tho cables.
Tho cotton report of tho Government was
us big a surprise to the bears as tho July
report had been to the bulls. It showed a
decllno of 8.8 points for the month and was
about 3 points under the average of recent
private reports. It Indicated oven greater
damage over the belt, particularly the east
ern half, than had been expected. Prices
Immediately Jumped IB to 10 points.
Just before the cotton report was pub
lished a canvas of 00 Cotton Bxchango
members showed an. average expectatlon-of
about 76.5 per cent, and prices showed a
sagging tendency, owing to a belief that a
comparatively low figure had been discount
ed, and that the moro favorable weather
sow prevailing In the belt, with the nearer
approach of the early movement, would
probably lead to Increased offerings.
