Rather would I face a lion In Ms den or a craaty man In his celt than th hew wife of my best friend. She eWHs me as she would her dearest enemy arid watehea me with the eye of a hawk. 'Though I have been as close to a man as Xtavfct was to Jonathan, I bid him a fond, farewell With tears In my eyes when ho Announces his Intention of hitching up In double harness. I can understand a woman's being jealous of another woman, fcut why is Bhe Jealous of a man?" For the same reason, I told him, that eh a Is Jealous of a man's business, his elnb, his goltpnd his Jog. A certain type f woman knows Only a possessive kind of love- Her Jdea of affection is absorption. Every minute of his time must bo hers, very waking thought, every dream of her. Instinctively sho fears her husband's former masculine associates as she mis trusts his old flames. They exerted power oncej has sho any assuranco that they may not exercise it again? This Is the selfish, possessive, tigress tort of lovo, of which the nower and wlsor kind of woman is curing horself. Sho realizes that tho attempts she makes to upplant nil of a man's Interests in life are more than likoly to result In failure. It wpuld take nn exceptional type of woman, an Aspasla, to say the least, to be all things to a man. A man's men friends mean much to him. They mean chiefly a medium for thb Interchange of Ideas that he has been cultivating since his boyhood. True, the Ideal wife should be a repository for his Intellectual as well as his emotional confidences. Few' women succoed at it, however, and those that do have sense enough not to over exercise tholr ability In this direction. Man Is a social animal. The Very wisost course that a wife can take, In my opinion, Is to court tho friendship of her husband's friends. They wilt provide tho backbone of a social group which, after the first (lush of tho honeymoon is over, will bo essential to the continued happy atmosphere of tho new menage. Bore dom is tho first answer to the question, Why do married men Jeave home? To feed the brute Is of courso vital; to keep him entertained is equally im portant Soon or late the womnn who nttemptsto keep her husband tied to her apron strings finds that he Is tugging In a direction away from her with nn onergy that is anything but flattering. Present ly tho string breaks and he is in danger of straying off. To bait him back Bhe should use his friends, but nlas, she has antagonized them nit. Sometimes she turns o'cr a new leaf and they live hap pily forever afterward. Belated wisdom is bettor than none at all, but tho canny woman starts right. Sho knows that we havo passed tho days of primitive narrow-mindedness, when a man and womnn thought It necessary to renounce tho world because they had chosen each other. M'LISS. It Is not according to good form to offer one's nrm to a lady any more. The habit Is decidedly old-fashioned and In the city would be considered very provincial.
