SPECULATIVE SITUATION DEPENDS
j. ON AGTION ON U. S. STEEL DIVIDENDS
Uroment of Stock Throughout Day Is Regarded as Con
Arming Predictions of Extra Payment Tomorrow.
Industrial Alcohol Takes Big Drop
t High Points in Todays Financial News
Philadelphia bank statement for last week showed detreases in all items.
Individual deposits dropped $13,180,000. Winthrop Mills detlared 80 per
eent dividend, Som inquiries for copper. Bar silver was lower in New
York and London. Ohio Cities Gas Company declared S per cent stock rft'vt
dend on common. Announcement was tndde of plans for the reorganization
of the United Railroads of San Francisco. Philadelphia Electric may call
final instalment of $2.50 a share tomorrow at its monthly directors' meeting.
Tonnage on eastern railroads continues at record rale. Mutual Trust Com
pany of Orange, N. J., was closed by order of the State Banking Insurance
Comniissioner. Kentucky and Tennessee coal companies petitioned the Inter
state Commerce Commission for joint through rates on coal from their mines
to Great Lake ports by way of Toledo and Sandusky.
NEW YORK, July 24.
The speculative Situation in the stock market depends at the present time on
iho action that may bo taken by the United States Steel directors on dividend
distribution tomorrow afternoon For a Ion? time statements had been made In
important quarters and repeated today that an extra payment In addition to tho
quarterly dividend of IVi per cent will be mado and that tho extra payments will
bo continued Until tho dividends passed In 1914 and 1915 are settled for with tho
common stockholders.
Some of tho trading clement on tho Street attempted to nullify this expecta
tion by insisting that no act&n in this direction will be taken until the end of tho
year, but tho action of tho stock throughout tho day was regarded as confirming
predictions of an extra payment.
In tho early trading It crossed $7, making a new high point for this movement
and it only shaved off Blightly from this rango during tho remainder of the day.
There was somo commission house buying in tho early trading and a few of tho
professional speculators on tho floor covered shorts In vol u mo enough to mako a
chow of strength In tho first few minutes; advances which were then mado worn
quickly lost, however, and the Important changes tho remainder of tho day, wcro
In tho shape of declines.
Industrial Alcohol, which sold In the early trading at 115H, dropped moro
than 10 points, and there was a heavy tono to Distillers Securities. Tho copper
stocks were firm for a short period, but receded after the opening, and similar
early gains In other Issues wcro followed by recessions.
Tho action of Industrial Alcohol was a good Indication of & market position
of tho -war-order stocks. Thore is little doubt but that tho company in tho last
year has made enormous profits from war contracts, but tho dlroctors and offi
cers and a few of tho higher-class employes are the only ones who have definite
knowledge as to its financial position.
Tho outside public Is simply trading In tho dark in theso issues and ventures
made by thoso outsldo of a certain group nro purposely made to result in disaster.
On tho room floor 'the movements .in Alcohol and similar stocks aro said to bo tho
result of manipulation, but that is a mild word to use.

NEW YORK, July 24. A firm tone was
displayed on the Cotton Exchange at the
start this morning, with trading on a larger
ecalo than has been witnessed for months.
Prices were 4 to 9 points net higher. July
dhorts ran to cover as soon as business
started, due to the fact that trading In
that option ends at noon tomorrow.
The buying was general. Wall street, the
South and some big operators leading. One
prominent room trader fought the advance
and sold every month on the call. There
was some commission house selling of the
active positions. '
Foreign buying was noted In options In
which there Is little or no speculation. After
tie call there were recessions of about 2
points, but the market held well at that
level.
It Is probable that continued unfavorable
weather was as much an Influence as any
other factor, Ilalns were reported In the
East aealn this morning, while the West,
where moisture Is needed, was" clear and
warm. Sunday's map also showed precipita
tion In the East.
The market af, Liverpool was QUlt and
steady, with prices 5 to 5 points higher,
Although they were due to come 6 to 7
points up, but this was Ignored In the local
trading.
The receipts of cotton at the ports for the
day were estimated at 5000 bales, compared
with 10,729 bales last week and 6009 bales
last year.

CIIICAQO, July 24. Erratic movements
In prices characterized tho trading In the
wheat market today, with the closing
strong. Although the weather in the north
west was cool and clear nnd prices dipped
n trifle at the start, a big advance was soon
scored under covering by belated shorts and
Investors.
Offerings on tho bulge were enormous
and tho market became qulto weak, July
selling ono cent below Saturday's close,
September 1U nnd December cent. Big
receipts at Kansas City and St. Louis were
factors on the drop.
Later on an expected decrease of 1,213,
000 bushels In tho visible supply In tho
United States for the week, coupled with
further reports of rust In the northwest,
stopped tho selling nnd caused renewed
buying, resulting In a Bharp bulge.
Firmness prevailed nt Liverpool on de
creasing stocks, rust news nnd Inadequate
arrivals. A brooder demand was noted
from tho continent.
Corn moved It regularly. The start was
higher becauso of nn nbsenco of material
rains but weakened. Tho cloio was above

NEW MOTOR STOCK
ACTIVE ON CURB
Strongberg in Brisk Demand.
Very Little Done in Other
Issues
NEW YORK, July 24. If It wasn't for
tho new Allan J. Ryan stock, Strongberg
Motor Devices, the Broad Street Curb today
would have presented little feature worth
noting. The stock was In brisk demand,
with buying coming from many Important
sources nnd sales were made at prices rang
ing from 42 to 42. The other Allan Ityan
stock, Stutz Motor, opened at 61 and
reacted to 63 51.
These two Issues attracted most attention
during the forenoon, but other motor stocks
were comparatively neglected, with United
Motor falling from 70 to 68. Pool Engi
neering dropped from 99 to 95 and there
was a loss of about 1 point in Aetna Explo
sives which sold below 9 after opening at
9.
The oil stocks were quiet and without Im
portant price changes. The majority of
stocks traded In on the Curb are apparently
waiting for Insiders to resume active opera
tions. The traders had loaded up with
some of these Issues at higher prices and
for some days past have been taking losses
on their holdings, and at present are not
disposed to enter the market again on the
bull side.
The Interests Identified with many of the
promotions are apparently overcautious and
are doing little even in Btocks like Mldvale
Steel, Kathodlon Bronze or Zinc Concen
trating. There was an upturn of 7 points In Chev
rolet, followed by a quick reaction. This
was the widest movement noted In any
Issues In the outside market.
New Missouri Pacific, when Issued, was
Introduced on the Curb for the first time
this afternoon at 2023, Nothing was
said of the preferred.
